{{Journal entry|
The kalphite are creatures of the desert, so they are at home here. It was trivial enough to steal a royal egg from their hive on the mainland, and bring it back here for study, and with each iteration of the brood I find myself more and more intrigued.

At first I thought they were a hive mind, the pinnacle of my research, but the more I learn, the more I realise that it’s not a singular consciousness, but a singular consensus. The queen demands and the hive obeys. They serve her because to serve her is right. The hive comes first and without the queen there is no hive.

This makes it annoyingly difficult to gather tissue samples from her, however. The soldiers, feeble as they are, gather around her like a protective wall and I must expend far more effort than is reasonable just to take a little blood, or a few of her eyes.

It’s fine, they grow back.
