A long-held frustration of the Zamorakian magi, the magical sect of the Children of Shadows, was that Zamorak never came to them. At no point did Zamorak ever set foot on the shores of Ashenfall. This fact is key to understanding the resentful mentality of the shadow mage: they feel a constant undercurrent of abandonment. It also explains why they believe that mystic cloth 'came from Zamorak himself'.

The story goes something like this: a Zamorakian apprentice-mage resolved to hang himself. He looked about his room but, so poor was he, he did not have the tools to perform that simple task. His chair could not bear his weight. His bedclothes ripped when he hung from them. He crumpled to the floor in misery.

In that moment, Zamorak came to him. The mage was awestruck. In Zamorak's hands was fibre that vibrated with magic. It hummed audibly - the mage felt that he could hear chanting from it. When the mage stared at it, the blue shimmered through hues of the rainbow, and then returned to blue.

"Take it, young mage," said Zamorak, and he handed the mystic fibres to the mage. "I will see you in the next life."

In a kind of prophetic panic, the apprentice carried the fibre to an archmage. He relayed how Zamorak had come to him and brought him - alone - this mystical new fibre. He was overjoyed. He wished for the Children of Shadows to have the fabric, and he asked permission to study it.

The apprentice was tried by a council of his peers and stoned to death. His crime was denying the will of Zamorak.

The fibre? The Archmage reverse-engineered its properties, and a new fabric was born.
