They are caught, cooked and consumed more often than is reasonable, and their suffering seemed too great as a result. So it was that a god took pity on them and gave them a defence.

			It is uncertain which god, for none have claimed responsibility, but the divine whimsy could be the result of any of them. All we know is that the fish now have a chance against their assailants, an armoured hide to ward off some of the worst of their misery.
