{{journal entry|
I found one of the rock people lying in the sand. He, if I should give them a gender, was only faintly glowing, as if the magma within him were cooling, turning into rock.

Should I have left him there? Perhaps. Certainly father would tell me so. They are the reason so many of my kinfolk are dead; their raids, against our caravans, are the reason so many starve in the fallow seasons. Yet, I found I could not just leave him alone in those last moments. No one should die in silence, without at least a chance to confess their fears.

His eyes - strange and shimmering, like they were carved from rock and placed upon his features – were somehow full of feeling, as if he were flesh and blood. He was afraid. Sad. Lost. I felt sorry for the creature, how strange is that?

The magma cooled around him, seeping out in some places as if he were wounded and bleeding out into the dunes. His limbs lay cold and useless by his sides, his entire existence locked in place at his torso as the cold spread slowly up his body, snuffing out his light.

A sound scratched from within him. The sound of it was like rocks scraping together. A hollow, cold thing, carrying with it a single word that I thought they didn’t even know.

“Sorry,” he said, as the last embers went dark.

I buried him in the sands, and left a marker for his kin to find. If they even look for their fallen. I’m not even sure they bury their dead.
