Nether fossils generate randomly throughout the Nether in [[Minecraft:soul sand valley]]s.

Due to a bug, Nether fossils in ''Bedrock Edition'' have been seen generating in existing chunks.{{cn|Needs bug tracker or video reports}}

== Structure ==

Nether fossils are composed of 5 to 27 [[Minecraft:bone block]]s. Unlike regular [[Minecraft:fossil]]s, they do not have a lowered [[Minecraft:Structure Block#Load|structure integrity]] and no blocks are replaced with [[Minecraft:Coal Ore|coal]] or [[Minecraft:diamond ore]]. They are made with the NBT [[Minecraft:structure block]] format and the NBT files for each fossil are stored in the folder {{code|[[Minecraft:minecraft.jar]]/data/minecraft/structures/nether_fossils}}.

Nether fossils have a <sup>1</sup>⁄<sub>3</sub> (~33.3%) chance of generating a [[Minecraft:dried ghast]] adjacent to them.

There are 14 different variants of Nether fossils:

* Nether fossils are one of the 3 [[Minecraft:generated structures]] that never generate with loot chests (the others being [[Minecraft:swamp hut]]s and [[Minecraft:ocean monument]]s).
* Nether fossils do not have [[Minecraft:coal ore]], [[Minecraft:deepslate diamond ore]], or [[Minecraft:diamond ore]], like their counterparts (Overworld [[Minecraft:fossil]]s).
