Unlike with other one-block-tall flowers {{in|Bedrock}}, players cannot spread wither roses on top of nearby grass blocks by applying [[Minecraft:bone meal]] on a wither rose.

A wither rose can be broken instantly with any item or by hand, dropping itself.

A wither rose also breaks if [[Minecraft:water]] or [[Minecraft:lava]] runs over its location, if a [[Minecraft:piston]] extends or pushes a block into its location, or if the block under the plant is moved or destroyed.

Like most flowers, wither roses can be used as decoration and planted on [[Minecraft:grass block]]s, [[Minecraft:dirt]], [[Minecraft:coarse dirt]], [[Minecraft:rooted dirt]], [[Minecraft:farmland]], [[Minecraft:podzol]], [[Minecraft:mycelium]], [[Minecraft:moss block]]s, [[Minecraft:pale moss block]]s, [[Minecraft:mud]], or [[Minecraft:muddy mangrove roots]]. They can also be planted on [[Minecraft:netherrack]] or [[Minecraft:soul sand]]. {{IN|java}}, wither roses can also be planted on [[Minecraft:soul soil]].

=== Damaging ===
When not in [[Minecraft:Peaceful]] difficulty, wither roses inflict the [[Minecraft:Wither (effect)|Wither]] effect to any [[Minecraft:player]]s or non-immune [[Minecraft:mob]]s touching it, dealing {{hp|1}} damage every half second. The effect lingers for 1 second after the player/mob leaves its [[Minecraft:block]] space. [[Minecraft:Wither skeleton]]s, the [[Minecraft:wither]], and the [[Minecraft:ender dragon]] are not affected because they are immune to the Wither effect.
