The '''Sol system''' (also known as '''Solar System''') is the birthplace of [[StarCitizen:Humanity]] and capital of the [[StarCitizen:UEE|Empire]]. The [[StarCitizen:Imperator]], [[StarCitizen:UEE Senate|Senate]] and many other major [[StarCitizen:UEE]] institutions are based on [[StarCitizen:Earth|Earth (Sol III)]]. Among the many historical milestones that the system can lay claim to is the first ever terraformed planet, [[StarCitizen:Mars|Mars (Sol IV)]].

==Planets==

===Mercury : Sol I===
{{Main|Mercury (Planet)}}

Due to an orbital eccentricity, this small planet experiences the greatest temperature variations of any planet in the system.

===Venus : Sol II ===
{{Main|Venus}}

Venus' atmosphere is almost entirely composed of carbon dioxide, which makes it the hottest planet in the Sol System.

===Earth : Sol III===
{{Main|Earth}}

Humanity's homeworld and namesake of the [[StarCitizen:UEE|United Empire of Earth]]. It is the center of the [[StarCitizen:UEE]] political machine and a focal point in the [[StarCitizen:UEE|Empire]]'s commerce and culture. Centuries of habitation have stripped the planet of its natural resources resulting in a heavy dependence on imports for the billions that live here.

===Mars : Sol IV===
{{Main|Mars}}

A prosperous and populous planet, [[StarCitizen:Mars]] was the [[StarCitizen:UEE|Empire]]'s first successfully terraformed planet. The process was marred by what is today known as the [[StarCitizen:Mars Tragedy]] when a terraforming disaster killed 4,876 people in [[StarCitizen:2125]].

===Jupiter : Sol V===
{{Main|Jupiter}}

This gas giant is the largest planet in the Sol System.

=== Saturn : Sol VI===
{{Main|Saturn}}

A gas giant best known for its set of planetary rings.

=== Uranus : Sol VII===
{{Main|Uranus}}

This ice giant has an unusual lopsided magnetic field due to a dramatic tilt of its axis that places its north and south poles where most other planets have their equator.

===Neptune : Sol VIII===
{{Main|Neptune}}

An ice giant whose differential rotation contributes to it having the strongest winds in the Sol System.

===Pluto : Sol IX (Dwarf Planet)===
{{Main|Pluto}}

This dwarf planet was the first major [[StarCitizen:Kuiper Belt]] object to ever be discovered and is primarily made of ice and rock.

==Asteroid belts==

===Herschel Belt===
{{Main|Herschel Belt}}

Also known simply as 'The Asteroid Belt', the [[StarCitizen:Herschel Belt|Hershel Belt]] is located between [[StarCitizen:Mars]] and [[StarCitizen:Jupiter]] and contains objects such as Dwarf Planet [[StarCitizen:Ceres]].

===Kuiper Belt===
{{Main|Kuiper Belt}}

The [[StarCitizen:Kuiper Belt]] lies beyond [[StarCitizen:Neptune]]'s orbit and contains objects such as [[StarCitizen:Pluto]].

====Planetary rings====

====Jovian Rings====
{{Main|Jovian Rings}}

A planetary asteroid belt orbiting Jupiter.

====Rings of Neptune====
{{Main|Rings of Neptune}}

A planetary asteroid belt orbiting Neptune.

====Rings of Saturn====
{{Main|Rings of Saturn}}

A planetary asteroid belt orbiting Saturn.

====Rings of Uranus====
{{Main|Rings of Uranus}}

A planetary asteroid belt orbiting Uranus.

==Space stations==

=== INS Dunleavy ===
{{Main|INS Dunleavy}}

Orbiting between [[StarCitizen:Saturn]] and [[StarCitizen:Uranus]] next to the [[StarCitizen:Sol - Davien]] [[StarCitizen:Jump Point|jump point]], this orbital [[StarCitizen:UEE Navy|Naval]] base acts as the main operational center for the main Sol fleet.

===TDD Kesner===
{{Main|TDD Kesner}}

Orbiting outside the [[StarCitizen:Kuiper Belt]], next to the [[StarCitizen:Sol - Croshaw]] [[StarCitizen:Jump Point|jump point]], [[StarCitizen:TDD Kesner]] is a major shipping hub where most cargo moving to [[StarCitizen:Earth]] is first processed - to help alleviate congestion on the [[StarCitizen:UEE|Empire]]'s capital world.

=== IMS Bolliver===
{{Main|IMS Bolliver}}

Though it is no longer in active service since the Marine forces stationed here were reassigned to [[StarCitizen:Mars]], the base remains strictly off limits.
== Trivia ==

* CIG sometimes refers to other systems as "solar systems", which occasionaly sparks heated debates among players. The use of "solar systems" to mean planetary systems other than ours, around other stars, appears in popular media articles, scientific websites, published scientific papers and scientific conferences.<ref>"[https://science.nasa.gov/sun/facts/ <nowiki>[...] many solar systems have more than one star [...].</nowiki>]" Our Sun: Facts, nasa.gov</ref><ref>[https://astrobites.org/2015/12/22/an-overview-of-the-extreme-solar-systems-iii-conference/ An Overview of the Extreme Solar Systems III Conferenc]e, astrobites.org, Dec 22, 2015</ref><ref>[https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9710116 Fitting random stable solar systems to Titius-Bode laws], arxiv.org, 10 Oct 1997</ref><ref>[https://arxiv.org/abs/0911.3974 Studies of Expolanets and Solar Systems with SPICA], arxiv.org, 20 Nov 2009</ref><ref>[https://arxiv.org/abs/1012.1143 Evolved solar systems in Praesepe], arxiv.org, 6 Dec 2010 </ref><ref>[https://arxiv.org/abs/1209.5724 Q in Other Solar Systems], arxiv.org, 25 Sep 2012]</ref><ref>[https://www.seradata.com/esa-selects-plato-mission-to-hunt-for-planet-in-other-solar-systems/ ESA selects PLATO mission to hunt for planets in other solar systems], seradata.com, Feb 26, 2014</ref><ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20121130195125/https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/herschel/news/herschel20121127.html Herschel Serves up Solar Systems with Extra Comets], nasa.gov, 11.27.12, archived</ref>
