Journal

The following text is transcribed from the Journal.

The Children of Shadows were never a grateful sort, but they would acknowledge that the groves of maple in Dowdun Reach were a boon. Almost everything wooden in the keep - from the library bookcases to the bannisters - was made from maple.

Alric relished walking among the maple trees. For so much of his life, he had been encased in stone and surrounded by essence: working long hours in the keep. But the maples were for thinking.

In his twilight years, Alric carried a maple staff with him: the Subjugation Staff. It was a crutch for an old man, yes, but it was also a way to bring the grove with him. When he couldn't muster the energy to visit his favoured trees, he carried a remnant with him.
