Template:Wip Pistons is a Minecraft:mod created by Elliot 'Hippoplatimus' Segal in 2011 that adds Minecraft:pistons and Minecraft:sticky pistons to Minecraft:Minecraft. The mod's pistons were integrated into vanilla Minecraft (with new textures and models), and Elliot Segal is credited in the Minecraft:credit sequence as "additional programming".<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20110402064652/http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=247686&f=1032</ref><ref>https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding-java-edition/minecraft-mods/1272764-1-1-piston-patch-updated-for-1-1</ref>
Features
There are two piston variants: normal pistons made of iron, and sticky pistons made of gold. They work similarly to their vanilla equivalents. They are crafted using iron or gold ingots around redstone dust, rather than with the crafting recipes they ended up being given in vanilla.
Differences from vanilla
The original pistons had a few functional differences compared to the official ones:
- The direction faced by the piston can be changed with the Template:Control control
- Pistons take 4 game ticks to extend or retract, instead of 2
- When a piston extends, it launches Minecraft:entities
- This is similar to what happens when a piston pushes a Minecraft:slime block in vanilla Minecraft
- Normal pistons can launch entities farther, compared to sticky pistons
- Pistons facing up that pushed Minecraft:sand or Minecraft:gravel turn these blocks into their falling block entity counterpart and then launch them
- Minecraft:Block entities can be moved
- The push limit is 16 instead of 12
- When a sticky piston attempts to pull another sticky piston that faces the same direction as the first one, the block in front of the second sticky piston is also pulled
- This works even for a row of sticky pistons, as long as they all face the same direction as the first one
- There is no pull limit
- Pistons only react to Minecraft:block updates caused by Minecraft:redstone components
- Extending pistons cannot start to retract before they've finished their extension
