"The Council's role is not just to protect, but to guide. It is our hand that shapes the fate of humanity. A heavy burden.
"Now, I wasn't briefed on your mission. You went to Murdo, if I recall correctly? Excellent pig country, I hear. Did you meet...oh, I apologize. You've lost your memories, haven't you? No matter, I'm sure Jarmanger can retrieve them for you.
"I know my decres can seem cruel. They seem cruel because they are cruel. I do not enjoy cruelty, and I am never cruel for cruelties sake. Trust that the benefits vastly outweigh the cruelty. Otherwise, well, I'd be a monster.
"Oh! A little bat told me you were back home. I'm sure Jarmanger will be eager to debrief you when he returns; he's on an errand right now. Is there something I can help you with? I'm afraid I wasn't privy to the details of your mission...
Can I ask you a question?
I can spare a few minutes for one of my most diligent agents. I understand you haven't recovered your memories from the last assignment, so I won't be concerned if you ask... basic... questions.
What do you know of Destriel and his incursions?
- Destriel is a demon. But what is a demon?
- A visitor from another realm?
- Demons don't come from another realm. After all, fairies come from the fae realm, and fairies are not demons. But you are close: demons come from another world in this same realm.
- What's the difference between a world and a realm?
- How do I explain? Have you ever looked up at the moon and thought "with the right potion or spell, I could jump to that moon?" You'd be right in thinking that was possible, though it would take more magic than any potion can muster. And of course, you would freeze and die quickly during the trip. But you lifeless corpse would ultimately reach the moon.
- Likewise, if you see a star in the sky, you could reach it with the correct magic. Sadly, by my calculations, the trip would take thousands of years and would be quite fatal, but it is theoretically possible. There are other worlds.
- The fae realm is different. No matter how well you fly, you cannot fly to the fae realm, even theoretically. It's not on any map of our realm, because it's in a different realm. Realms mostly don't touch each other. It's possible to connect realms through portals, but we don't understand that magic very well. In practice, realms mostly stay distinct.
- What's important about demons is that they are from our realm. Perhaps they are from one of the stars we see at night. Simple, right? However, these ideas get a bit muddled because demons travel via realm-jumping as a shortcut to shrink the distance they must travel. So they tend to appear from portals, just like fairies do.
- A question for you: why do I think it's important to explain that demons come from our realm?
- Because we can super-jump to their homes and surprise-attack them?
- No, you dolt! I told you, jumping to a star would take an incredible number of years. We don't have the luxury of waiting a few centuries for your surprise-attack plan to work.
- Sorry, geez. So why, then? I guess... being from the same realm, they're like us somehow?
- Because they are more like us than unlike us. It can help to understand them.
- Yes! They are creatures not entirely unlike us. They have corporeal forms. They have consciousness contained in their bodies. They age. There is such a thing as a "young demon," whereas a "young fairy" is almost a nonsense phrase.
- And perhaps most importantly, they die.
- Now, it turns out they have clever ways to cheat death, just as we humans do. But we can circumvent their methods the same way they can circumvent ours.
- It also speaks to their nature in another way. Destriel is greedy, and dominating, and loves power. We can understand this, because demonic urges are not unlike our urges.
- Now tell me: why now?
- Why now what?
- Destriel controls dozens of worlds in our realm. In fact if you believe Jarmanger, Destriel controls hundreds of worlds. I think the real number must be much smaller, but that's beside the point. These armies have been conquering worlds for quite some time. Why did they attack us now?
- Well... something must have changed about the situation?
- Correct. Our world exists in a pocket of powerful magical energy. That magical energy eventually obtained consciousness. We know it as the goddess Laeth. Laeth has kept our world safe from outsiders. In fact, she still does so. Demons could not "leap" from their world to ours -- first because they wouldn't know where to jump, for our star does not shine in their sky. Laeth sees to that. But even i they knew where we were, their "leap" would be stopped by the barrier Laeth has placed around us.
- Laeth's barrier still stands: she did not fail us. The demons got in another way. They entered the fae realm in massive ships -- ships capable of flight through the blackness of space. They traveled in the fae realm to another portal, one that lets out on our world's surface, bypassing Laeth's barrier.
- But they had to travel through the fae realm for years to reach us. It's extremely unlikely that they would have ever stumbled upon us naturally.
- What does that tell you?
- They had to already know about our world. Someone told them about us.
- Very good. Someone told the demons about us and explained how to reach us. And what kind of incredibly idiotic person would do that?
- Don't answer that.
- It's too late for hiding now. This isn't the first demonic invasion -- in my long lifetime there have been two others.
- The gods of this world are very powerful and very protective, so it's unlikely that the demons will take over more than a country or so. But if Dreva or Kirad get directly involved, it won't end well for Statehelm. Or what's left of the countryside. So we need to take care of this quickly. That's what Jarmanger is working on.
- Meanwhile, Janas was supposed to be working on a way to seal our world off forever to prevent further armies arriving. That work is... postponed. But still important.
- Basically anybody with red skin and horns?
Can you tell me about the Gods?
- Ugh, I'm sick of that topic right now! I've written 43 volumes on the Gods, you know, and I just finished editing the latest volume. I'm going to have to direct you to those works for detailed info.
- But there: this short book covers the basics. I designed it to be compact, so naturally I had to leave a lot out, but it explains things every citizen should know.
