The Picoball was created first in real life by StarCitizen:Jared Huckaby for the StarCitizen:Inside Star Citizen StarCitizen:2020 halloween special and then modeled by StarCitizen:John Carney during a Star Citizen Live broadcast as a reference to StarCitizen:New Babbage's mascot StarCitizen:Pico the Penguin.<ref>Inside Star Citizen: Interface Showcase | Fall 2020</ref><ref>Star Citizen Live: The Pico Proposition</ref> The Picoball has since been added to StarCitizen:Star Citizen.

According to Jared Huckaby, 9 Picoballs have been hidden within the game,<ref>Star Citizen Live Gamedev: Invictus Historical Uniforms</ref> the first of which was found lying on a bunk in StarCitizen:Calhoun Pass Emergency Shelter on January 7, 2022.<ref>team Brigade Twitch clip</ref> On July 4th, 2022 JimmySimmer posted on Twitter claiming to be the first to collect all 9 Picoballs.<ref>https://twitter.com/JimmySimmer/status/1551266233907036162</ref> Later that day, JimmySimmer replied to his own claim, listing the 9 unique Picoball locations. These locations were later confirmed by other players.

After JimmySimmer identified and collected all nine Picoballs he posted the list of the nine unique locations on Twitter.
