The dwarves know that the earth has a memory, gemstones especially so. What they don't tell you is that the earth holds a grudge. Each time a pick pierces the stone or smashes a piece of ore from its home, the earth remembers.

A skilled enchanter can use that grudge, that earthen memory, and turn it back against the bitter earth. Traditionally this is done via jewellery, with dwarven goldsmiths making most of their living from miners purchasing these trinkets.
