Although the name may be sinister, the robes and the people who wear them are not automatically evil.
The first set of dark mage robes were so named because the technique to craft them required cloth that had been dyed by a unique alchemical mixture. As the years passed and Guthix introduced runes, the mixture was replaced with subtle enchantments, though the appearance was kept the same for tradition’s sake.
Naturally, many practitioners of magic preferred this armour because of its darker aesthetic. Indeed, many rogue “dark wizards” would don this armour and use magic to engage in sinister undertakings, earning this armour’s moniker a more sinister meaning.
