Changes
World generation
General
- Level generation was redesigned from the irregular terrain shown in Minecraft:Cave game tech test to produce a completely flat world, similar to a modern Minecraft:superflat world.
- Terrain generates from Y=0 to Y=43.
- Space below Y=0 is empty.
- The top layer at Y=43 consists of Minecraft:grass blocks, while all lower terrain consists of Minecraft:stone.
Removals
World generation
- No longer generate.
Bugs
3 bugs reported
- Minecraft:Blocks can be placed directly within the space occupied by the player.<ref>TigIRC logs: "(14:10:09) Zaratustra: I can spawn blocks where I currently exist" [...] "(14:10:32) notch: yeah, it's one of those bugs.. I keep ignoring it" (18:10 UTC, May 16, 2009)</ref> This bug remained in the game until Minecraft:Classic 0.0.9a.
- On some systems, commonly those featuring Intel GPUs, there is extreme performance issues causing the framerate to drop to 1. This is caused by the old renderer repeatedly redrawing every single block around the player every frame instead of only updating changed blocks like in modern versions. This overwhelms weak OpenGL drivers. This bug was most likely not in the original version.
- The camera pivot bug causes the view to rotate around a fixed point in the world instead of rotating on the player's axis. This causes the player's perspective to shift as the camera rotates.
Trivia
- The "rd" prefix in the version title stands for Minecraft:RubyDung, a game Notch was developing in early 2009 whose codebase was repurposed for Minecraft.
- Level data is saved in a single Template:Cd file inside the game's root directory, unlike future versions that have dedicated folders.
- Although the intended world size is 256×64×256, worlds of any dimensions can be loaded. Worlds smaller than the intended size have terrain generated over them, while larger worlds are truncated.
- Grass blocks are stored using the same block ID as stone; the difference between them is purely visual.
- Despite normally only using 2 block IDs (0 and 1), 0–255 are all possible IDs. Invalid IDs appear as air, but do not get converted into it upon saving the world.
- Because of these behaviors, nearly any gzipped file named Template:Cd can theoretically be loaded as a world, including a [[Minecraft:Java Edition level format#level.dat format|modern Template:Cd file]]. Saving such a world is likely to corrupt it because of terrain generation or truncation.
