Journal

The following text is transcribed from the Journal.
Magic always inspires people. Something about rewriting the underpinning rules of your reality, with little more than force of will and a handful of stones, makes people reach for lofty goals. In Fellhollow it was the wizard Falistrius who wanted to make a name for herself.

She wanted to be a magical scholar. A researcher who might uncover the secrets of the universe itself. They sought spells of greater and greater power, dabbling in mysteries both profane and forbidden, and came up empty-handed.

After constantly searching for power, it was an unexpected duel that would grant her the fame she sought, at a price she would have preferred to avoid. A travelling elven sorcerer arrived in the village of Emberwood one night and the local drunk foolishly picked a fight with him. Unfortunately for Falistrius that drunk was her wife.

The elf challenged the drunk to a duel, for satisfaction over a drink spilled, and by local custom Falistrius was forced to answer. They met in the forests of Fellhollow, and unleashed their magic.

The elf’s spells were like nothing she had ever seen before. Cold and dark, sanguine and terrible, they tore into her magical defences like they were nothing and writhed inside her soul like a foul nightmare. Against the strain, her staff shattered, leaving her vulnerable. In desperation she grasped a fallen hollow tree branch and urged her magic through it.

It wasn’t enough to save her. But it was enough to earn the respect and satisfaction of the sorcerer, who left the region with his pale-skinned cohorts. Ever since then, young Fellhollow mages would craft staves from the hollow bark from the forest, in memory of Falistrius.
