Asterion is surrounded by the weaker creatures of Labyrinth, mostly Flapskulls, Lamias, and Cockatrices. He has some sort of super-speed until he gets aggro'd - if you wait at the entrance, you can sometimes see him zooming around. It's best to kill as many minions as you can before fighting him.
Be advised that if you get hit by his rage attack it's very unlikely that you will be un-cursed even if your group defeats him. Citan has said there will be an update for this at some point.
