A crate of commodity

Commodities are generally resources intended to be processed or traded rather than equipped for personal use, such as StarCitizen:Personal Weapons or StarCitizen:Props.<ref name="rsi-commodities">Template:Cite RSI</ref> Much of a player's progression in StarCitizen:Star Citizen is driven by trading goods, from high-value items carried on foot to volume-based hauling in the largest cargo ships.

Acquisition

Commodities can be purchased from mining outposts, hydroponic farms, and stations to be resold when or where demand is higher, or sourced directly through exploration, StarCitizen:mining, and StarCitizen:salvaging.<ref name="rsi-commodities" /> Many commodities that can be collected on foot are found in and around StarCitizen:Caves.

Storage and transport

Most ships and vehicles carry SCU cargo grids that hold commodities in shipping crates, though some are specialised for the role, such as the StarCitizen:MISC Prospector and its mining saddlebags.<ref name="rsi-commodities" />

Refining

Gems collected by hand are ready to trade, but unrefined commodities such as mined ore cannot be sold at standard commodity terminals. They must first be sold to a refinery for processing.<ref name="rsi-commodities" />

Trading

A ship must be landed legally for its cargo to appear in a commodity terminal.<ref name="rsi-commodities" />
