Not all cats are terrified of crossbows, though most of the Bramblemead population quickly learned to fear them. Some cats could see their merit but were painfully aware of their human pet’s limited imagination.

Mittens was the lifelong owner of Gothren Actillian. A blacksmith’s cat, he had learned how to keep the forge fires perfectly hot by playfully jumping on the bellows periodically – something his pet seemed to enjoy. He knew the right length of time a sword should be cooled for and would make sure his human stuck to that timing by offering useful alarms made of glorious clattering things.

But blurite? That was a new one. Mittens could see there was little value to the metal, beyond some weird human aesthetic that he did not understand, yet there was some potential to the construction. With carefully timed meows, and some creative knocking over of reagents, Mittens was able to engineer a crossbow of superior design, worthy of his cherished pet.
