Zamorak never came to Dowdun Reach. Its gates were never graced by the mahjarrat. No general came, or ambassador from the mainland. Even the ZMI failed to send an offshoot to the keep.
How was that possible? Chaos taught them that, by simple laws of averages, a high-ranking Zamorakian should have stumbled onto their shores. Ashenfall and Dowdun Reach was too much of an opportunity. Greed must have led a Zamorakian highborn here.
The silence was deafening. Everyone who lived or worked in the keep knew what this meant: Zamorak had barred his inner circle from visiting Ashenfall, likely at pain of death. How else could Dowdun Reach have been left alone for so long?
But why? Why did Zamorak keep Ashenfall at arm's length? The answers differed, depending on the zeal of the follower. Zamorak feared something on Ashenfall. Zamorak knew that something made it worthless. Zamorak was already here, just without Dowdun's knowing. Zamorak is in all of us.
Remarkably, that mystery only strengthened the beliefs of Dowdun's Zamorakians. By being so contemptible to Zamorak, they were utterly important. They were main characters in Zamorak's performance.
It suggests another reason why Zamorak might have left Ashenfall alone. Perhaps he wanted to show that nothing - not even his disdain - would soften his people's infatuation.
