Template:Distinguish Template:Infobox enchantment Fortune is an Minecraft:enchantment applied to Minecraft:tools that gives a chance to receive more item drops from certain blocks.
Obtaining
Fortune can be obtained from Minecraft:enchanting tables, drops from mobs that have spawned in a Minecraft:raid,Template:Only books obtained by Minecraft:fishing, librarian Minecraft:villagers, and in the following structures loot chests: Minecraft:desert pyramids, Minecraft:strongholds, Minecraft:ocean ruins, Minecraft:mansions, Minecraft:pillager outposts, Minecraft:ancient cities, Minecraft:End cities, Minecraft:mineshafts, Minecraft:monster rooms, Minecraft:jungle pyramids, and from vaults in Minecraft:trial chambers.

Note: the correct tool is not needed.
Ore
For Minecraft:coal ore, Minecraft:diamond ore, Minecraft:emerald ore, Minecraft:lapis lazuli ore, Minecraft:iron ore, Minecraft:copper ore, Minecraft:gold ore, Minecraft:Nether gold ore, Minecraft:Nether quartz ore, and Minecraft:amethyst clusters, Fortune I gives a 33% (Template:Frac) chance to multiply drops by 2 (averaging 33% (Template:Frac) increase), Fortune II gives a chance to multiply drops by 2 or 3 (25% (Template:Frac) chance each, averaging 75% (Template:Frac) increase), and Fortune III gives a chance to multiply drops by 2, 3, or 4 (20% (Template:Frac) chance each, averaging 120% (1Template:Frac) increase).
Generally speaking, Fortune gives a weight of 2 to a normal drop chance and adds a weight of 1 for each extra drop multiplier. In short, when an ore is mined, the chance for no bonus drops is <math>\frac{2}{\mathsf{level}+2}</math> and if a bonus is applied, there is an equal chance for any number of drops between 2 and <math>\mathsf{level}+1</math>
The formula to calculate the average drops multiplier is <math>\frac{1}{\mathsf{level}+2}+\frac{\mathsf{level}+1}{2}</math>, which means Fortune II gives 1.75x (1Template:Frac) drops on average, Fortune III gives 2.2x (2Template:Frac) drops on average, etc.

Minecraft:Creaking hearts, Minecraft:glowstone, Minecraft:melons, Minecraft:Nether wart, Minecraft:redstone ore, Minecraft:sea lanternsTemplate:Only, and Minecraft:sweet berry bushes use a Template:W, meaning each possible drop amount is equally likely to be dropped. Fortune increases the maximum number of drops by 1 per level. However, maximum drop limitations might apply: glowstone has a capacity of 4 glowstone dust, sea lanterns have a capacity of 5 prismarine crystals, and melons have a capacity of 9 melon slices. If a drop higher than these maximums is rolled, it is rounded down to the capacity.

Short grass and ferns
Minecraft:Short grass and Minecraft:ferns have a fixed chance, unaffected by Fortune, to drop Minecraft:wheat seeds. If the drop occurs, Fortune increases the maximum number of seeds that can be dropped by 2, by affecting a discrete uniform distribution.

Minecraft:Beetroots (seeds only), Minecraft:carrots, Minecraft:potatoes, and Minecraft:wheat (seeds only) use a Template:W. Fortune increases the number of tests for the distribution, and thus the maximum number of drops, by 1 per level.
Wheat and beetroot
Template:IN, the binomial distribution in the default case is created by rolling three times (n=3) with a drop probability of 57% (p=Template:Frac), then an additional seed is added, creating the typical drop of 1-4 seeds.
Template:IN, the drop is also rolled three times with a probability of 53% (p=Template:Frac), without the additional seed.

Incompatibilities
Minecraft:Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive. If commands are used to apply both Silk Touch and Fortune to an item, the Silk Touch enchantment takes precedence over the Fortune enchantment for blocks affected by both enchantments.
