shield_patterns.png-atlas is a procedurally-generated Minecraft:texture atlas used to store textures for all Minecraft:shields and shield Minecraft:banner patterns.
Format
shield_patterns.png-atlas is a fixed-width 512×512-pixel file that store textures for all shields and shield banner patterns.

Mipmapped versions
Minecraft also generates mipmapped versions of this atlas, for unknown reasons. They are not used by the game at all - only blocks placed in the world which use the json model system use mipmapped textures.<ref>Template:Bug</ref> The mipmapped version no longer generates in Minecraft:1.21.9.
