The Challenge of Ice and Magma is the sixth episode of Minecraft Mini-Series.

Summary

CommuniKate greets her audience on Scatter Island before she blows up the participants' shelter, harming two endermen. She, Zed, and the participants set off to higher ground, the two former riding horses and the third riding llamas. They go across a bridge in a rainy forest before they finally reach the mountains where the challenge will take place. Durango gets fascinated seeing iron golems build a snow racetrack. CommuniKate then brings out her command block to excecute a command to fill some holes on the track with magma blocks.

Seeing her commands at work, Toby finally realizes what the block is and tells his teammate Quinn about its purpose and why they need to get their hands on CommuniKate's book of codes. During an interview with Quinn, she tells how Toby explained the uses of the command block, but then pretends appreciating the show and hoping to win.

Back to CommuniKate, she names the racetrack challenge the Challenge of Ice and Magma where teams must cross a frozen lake and avoid the arrows of strays along the raised shore. After reaching the racetrack, one team member must craft snow blocks with Minecraft:snowballs while the other must retrieve a Minecraft:pumpkin by going through an alternating water-magma obstacle course. The first team to successfully summon a snow golem wins the prize. While trying to demonstrate how to summon one, Zed falls over because of the golem he built. The scene then cuts to Durango, who feels confident to win but very hungry. Because of this, CommuniKate reveals the prize consisting of lots of Minecraft:steak, appealing all the teams.

Meanwhile, as Quinn walks by, she hears a whisper from a snow hole, which reveals to be Mo. The latter explains how she survived the explosion on Eerie Island by tunneling to the final island where the eliminated teams were imprisoned. She tells Quinn to "stay in-game, stay alive, then rescue [her friends]". Quinn then gets startled by a snowball Durango threw at her, and tells Mo that she is always ready to expose CommuniKate's treacherous plan and stop Durango's annoyance.

Before the challenge starts, CommuniKate provides some diamond boots enchanted with Frost Walker dropped on the other side of the lake to help the contestants deal with water and magma. As she starts the challenge, Team Mesa avoids an arrow shot by a stray, and gathers their boots. Meanwhile, Toby tries to catch up but gets slowed by an arrow. Back to Team Mesa, Durango runs across the few water blocks on the river, freezing them, but also gets shot.

Team Tundra, without any boots, finally reaches the racetrack, with Rudi specializing in crafting and a starving Sacha tasked in retrieving the pumpkin. During an interview with Rudi, he says he will finally put his "cold-weather engineering skills" to use. Back to the challenge, Quinn and River manage to reach the racetrack, running safely thanks to their boots. However, Durango, who is tasked with snow block crafting, complains about the Slowness effect from the arrow. Rudi manages to place two snow blocks, while Sacha retrieves the pumpkin. However, while trying to get back and due to her barefootness, she receives heavy damage from magma blocks and eventually dies from hunger pain. CommuniKate then announces Rudi that his team has been eliminated and teleports him away because "[his] teammate's munchies got the better of her".

Meanwhile, Quinn and River are seen racing with their pumpkins. In order to use a shortcut, the former throws an ender pearl she kept with her but gets stopped by a wall of snow CommuniKate summoned. The host admitted this behavior as cheating and all players must play by her rules. Quinn, however, denies the banning of ender pearls, and CommuniKate threatens to eliminate Team Stone Beach. After that, River manages to finish her team's snow golem, which starts to throw snow balls at strays on the lake and Durango's hat. Annoyed by Quinn's cheating, CommuniKate announces Team Mesa as winners and gives them the steaks. The team agrees on sharing some of their food, all the members replenishing their hunger bars. Within Team Stone Beach, Toby still insists on getting their hands on the book of codes. In the background, Zed is seen trying to play with a baby polar bear and gets attacked by the bear's parent. At dusk, the teams and hosts sail boats to Arena Island where the final two challenges will take place.
