StarCitizen:Maelstrom (destruction system)

From SAS Gaming Wiki

Maelstrom is the StarCitizen:Star Engine's physically based destruction system.<ref name=":0">CitizenCon 2953: Shaping the ‘Verse - The Future of StarEngine, Star Citizen, YouTube, 24 oct. 2023</ref>

Many of the structures created by StarCitizen:Starchitect or Base Building as part of Genesis will feature the Maelstrom destruction system, allowing for a range of scales of geometry fracturing and physics dependent on the force used. For instance, a P4-AR may be able to shoot small chunks out of a barricade, while a GP-33 could be able to raze a small structure with one shot.<ref name=":0" />

Maelstrom is to be implemented in both StarCitizen:Squadron 42 and StarCitizen:Star Citizen as a ship destruction system. StarCitizen:Ships using Maelstrom require converting from the prior "PU damage model" used in Star Citizen, a process referred to as "pressing a few buttons" due to Maelstrom's ability to import from the prior model. This is followed by further dedicated work from the StarCitizen:Tech art and StarCitizen:Ship art teams of StarCitizen:Cloud Imperium to make ships more believably destructible.<ref>Star Citizen Live: Invictus Ship Talk (Maelstrom) (timestamped): https://youtu.be/fOkYR-y2Sx4?t=1595</ref>

The Maelstrom system is also used for deriving and calculating the physical mass of detachable and destructible ship parts based on their applied materials and thicknesses, instead of priorly-used rough volume calculations and designer-set values.<ref>Star Citizen Live: Invictus Ship Talk (Maelstrom mass) (timestamped): https://youtu.be/fOkYR-y2Sx4?t=1737</ref>

The applied hull materials of a ship will be used in the calculation of armor effectiveness in Maelstrom.<ref>Template:Cite RSI</ref>
