The series is named in homage to the first commercially available spaceship equipped with the StarCitizen:Quantum drive, the StarCitizen:Zeus, built by Roberts Space Industries in StarCitizen:2140. The [[StarCitizen::Category:Zeus Mk II series|Zeus Mk II]] has a passing resemblance to the original Zeus, with a more angled design.

The Zeus Mk II ST was discussed during the Star Citizen Live: Ship Showdown Q&A. StarCitizen:John Crewe found out that he had accidentally included it in a CitizenCon presentation when he turned around on stage and saw an image with four Zeus Mk IIs; it had been decided not to include it in the launch of the Zeus Mk II as its game loop was not "fully fleshed out".<ref>Star Citizen Live: Ship Showdown Q&A (timestamped): https://youtu.be/R97aCFJmPSQ?t=900</ref>
