The chat is a built-in messaging system used to communicate with other players in Minecraft:multiplayer, or to execute Minecraft:commands. Template:IN, the chat is a Minecraft:menu screen that darkens the background.
Usage
By default, players can press Template:Key or Template:Key (regular key or number pad)Template:Only for keyboards, File:Chat button.png for touchscreens, or Template:Ore UI Cont for controllers to open the chat menu. Recent chat messages are shown on the left side of the Minecraft:HUD for 3 seconds by default.
Communication
The primary purpose of the chat is for player communication. Generally, the player simply types out their message and presses Template:Key (regular key or number pad), Template:Ore UI Cont/Template:Ore UI Cont/Template:Ore UI Cont, or the send button.Template:Only It will then be sent to all players in the Minecraft:world prefixed by the player's name (<Player>).
If the player wishes to privately message another player, they can use the Template:Cmd command to "whisper" it. Template:Cmd can be used to broadcast a message to all players in third person, formatted like * Player. Template:Cmd sends a message identical to regular chat messaging but prefixed by [Player].

Template:IN, messages from the current Minecraft:party chat appear in the gameplay chat, prefixed by [Party]<Player> with the name in blue. Informational party chat messages also appear in the gameplay chat in blue. Players can also broadcast messages to the party chat using the Template:Cmd command.
The Template:Cmd commandTemplate:Upcoming can be used to toggle visibility of certain chat channels and send messages in a specific channel. Available channels include the regular world chat, the party chat, and the global chat (Template:Cmd) which is currently unused.
Mentioning
In Bedrock Edition, the at symbol (@) can be used to autocomplete (with Template:Key) and highlight a player name in chat. Entering @here mentions all players. When a player is mentioned, the name will be highlighted in a different color for them. The color is yellow by default, but can be changed in the chat settings.
While mentioning is not present in Java Edition, Template:Key can be used to autocomplete a player's Minecraft:username.
Formatting
§r) textPlayers can use Template:Cmd command to send stylized texts on the chat using Minecraft:text component. They may apply various text styles, such as custom colors, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, and more. In Bedrock Edition, the section symbol (§) also allows players to change the style of the text with Minecraft:formatting codes, without requiring cheats.
As with any text input, in Java Edition, 43 emojis are supported by the game's default font, Mojangles (see Template:Slink). They are shown as pixelated icons on text fields, including the chat. In Bedrock Edition, certain characters in the Unicode Template:Ws or shortcodes (such as :furnace:) are reserved for private-area emojis in the game, such as the hunger and armor icons, controller icons, and more.<ref>https://github.com/TwistedAsylumMC/bedrock-unicode-characters</ref><ref>https://wiki.bedrock.dev/text/emojis</ref> Other emojis and unknown characters appear as a question mark (?).
Commands
Players can also type commands into the chat. Commands are identified by the use of a forward slash (Template:Key) at the beginning of the message. By default, the Template:Key key opens the chat with a / already present to easily run commands.
While typing, pressing Template:Key autocompletes the first possible command or username starting with the letter(s) typed. If there are multiple usernames or commands beginning with the letter(s), a list of possibilities is displayed; pressing Template:Key again scrolls through the list.
- Some commands may also have additional parameters that may be auto-completed by pressing Template:Key at that point.
- Certain commands that handle blocks (ex. Template:Cmd) have parameters that need the Minecraft:coordinates of the target block(s). Pressing Template:Key when these coordinates are needed automatically adds the coordinates of the block the player is looking at.
Quick commands
Template:Exclusive There are a few buttons in the chat to execute commands without having to type them in. These commands include Template:Cmd, Template:Cmd, Template:Cmd, and Template:Cmd. Pressing a command opens a list of arguments. For Template:Cmd, all players are shown in both the Template:Cd and Template:Cd arguments. After selecting arguments, they can be executed like normal and also edited in text.
Quick commands are only available when cheats are enabled and the player is an operator (Minecraft:permission level 1).

Coordinates
The chat also shows the player's coordinates when "Enable Copy Coordinate" in the Creator Minecraft:settings tab is enabled. The player can view and copy both the player's current coordinates (shown with two decimals) and the coordinates of the block the player is facing ("Invalid Coordinates" when not facing a block). Both coordinates can also be copied with the Template:Control and Template:Control hotkeys. Coordinates are shown on any Minecraft:world or Minecraft:server, even when the game rule Template:Game rule link is disabled.
The button next to the copy button pastes any copied text into the text box.
Chat settings
Template:IN, a chat settings menu can be opened from the chat menu. Options such as the Minecraft:font, text color and size, and line spacing can be changed here. For an overview of the chat settings Template:In configurable through the main options screen, see Template:Slink.
The chat background opacity and chat message duration for chat messages shown on the Minecraft:HUD can't be adjusted from the chat settings menu, but can be found in the accessibility settings.

Message history
A player can scroll through the message history using the scroll bar on the side of the chat, the scroll wheel, Template:Key/Template:KeyTemplate:Only the right thumbstick, or by swiping on touchscreen. The last 100 chat messages are stored. Template:IN, holding down Template:Key or Template:Key slows down scrolling.
The player can paste their own recently sent messages by pressing the Template:Key and Template:Key keys while typing.
Template:IN, when a new message appears while scrolled up in the chat history, a green styled Minecraft:tooltip appears informing there are new messages.
Informational messages
Template:Expand section There are several informational messages shown on the chat when specific actions happen in the Minecraft:world:
- If a player or a named tamed Minecraft:pet dies in the world, a Minecraft:death message is announced to the chat.
- When a player joins or leaves the game, they are announced to the chat.
- When Template:Gmr is enabled, all Minecraft:command blocks when executing a command notify the admin through the chat.
- In Bedrock Edition, when a player uses an Minecraft:emote, it is announced to the chat with the emote's name.
- In Bedrock Edition, when a player changes their character in the Minecraft:Character Creator, it is announced to the chat after the character changed.
- In Bedrock Edition, when a player joins a world or travels between Minecraft:dimensions, chat instructions are shown exclusively to that player, which show the Minecraft:keys to open the chat and to open the emote GUI. The message can be toggled in the accessibility settings.
Drafts
Unsent chat messages will be saved as drafts when chat is forcibly closed from external sources such as dying or opening dialog. When chat is opened next time, the draft is visible in gray and italic. It can be converted to a normal message by typing more text, using arrow keys, clicking the chat or selecting it by using Template:Key or Template:Key.
Text filtering and restrictions
Template:IN, any inappropriate word or phrase typed in the chat (and all other text inputs) is censored and replaced by number signs (#). This can be turned off with the "Profanity Filter" option in the Minecraft:settings, but only if the player is signed in with a verified Microsoft account; otherwise, the option is greyed out and cannot be disabled. There is also a creator setting which allows to set a delay for filtering, up to 5 seconds. The list of censored phrases can be found internally under Content/data/profanity_filter.wlist (where the content is encoded in Template:W).
A similar feature is available in Java Edition's Minecraft:server.jar by configuring undocumented text-filtering-config and text-filtering-version options from Minecraft:server.properties.<ref>https://walshy.dev/blog/21_03_16-mc-new-text-filtering</ref> They are used internally by Minecraft:Realms, togglable in the Minecraft:minecraft.net profile page.
In the United Kingdom, chat is restricted if players did not verify their age for their Xbox account. This effect is different from each edition:
- In Java Edition, this restricts sending chat messages in a Minecraft:multiplayer world and receiving them.
- In Bedrock Edition, this blocks communication only between players that are not mutual Xbox Minecraft:friends.
In Bedrock Edition, Minecraft:servers may disable the in-game chat using chat-restriction in Minecraft:server.properties. This can either drop chat messages and not send them to any clients, informed with a warning, or completely disable the chat UI.
