Minecraft:Lantern

Template:Infobox block A lantern is a Minecraft:block that emits Minecraft:light. It is brighter than a Minecraft:torch, and can be placed on top of or hang from the bottom of most blocks.

Lanterns can be broken with any tool, and always drop as an item, but using a Minecraft:pickaxe is the fastest. Template:Breaking row

Natural generation

Lanterns can generate as lamps or lamp posts above farms and on some buildings in Minecraft:snowy tundra Minecraft:villages and in Minecraft:bastion remnants.

Usage

Template:MainSimilarly to other types of lanterns, lanterns can either be placed on top of, or hung from, the surfaces of most solid blocks (though some blocks will require Template:Control).

To place a lantern on top of a block, aim at the block's top face, and press Template:Control. To hang a lantern from the bottom of a block, aim at the block's bottom face, and press Template:Control. Also similarly to other lanterns, if a lantern is hung from the bottom face of a Minecraft:chain, the lantern and the chain will connect seamlessly.

Lanterns can also be placed by pressing Template:Control on a block adjacent to an air block the lantern could occupy, much like other types of lantern. Pressing Template:Control on the top half of the adjacent block will hang the lantern from the bottom of an above block, and pressing Template:Control on the bottom half of the adjacent block will place the lantern down on the top face of a bottom block.

Like other types of lantern, if a lantern exists on an invalid surface (a surface where the soul lantern could not normally be placed on), the lantern will break and drop itself, upon the invalid surface receiving a Minecraft:block update.

Light

The lantern is among the most luminous of light sources, emitting a light level of 15. Lanterns also melt Minecraft:snow layers within 2 blocks and Minecraft:ice within 3 blocks (Minecraft:taxicab distance).

When the Minecraft:Render Dragon Features for Creators experiment is enabled in Minecraft:Minecraft Preview, the inside of lanterns emits colored point lighting with Template:Color. The casing of the lantern blocks a part of the light and casts some shadows around the lantern.

Piston interactivity

A lantern is destroyed when a Minecraft:piston tries to push it. It cannot be pulled by Minecraft:sticky pistons.

• Minecraft:Turtle eggs can support lanterns placed both above and below them, despite the fact that this causes the lanterns to appear floating.<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
