Rarity is a statistic applied to Minecraft:items and Minecraft:blocks to signify their value and ease in obtaining. Rarity only affects the displayed color of an item name and has no effect on gameplay whatsoever.
There are four rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Epic. The rarity of an item is generally based on the difficulty of getting it, the time it takes to obtain it and the ingredients used to craft it.
The rarity of an item can be increased by giving it Minecraft:enchantments. A Common or Uncommon becomes Rare, and a Rare item becomes Epic. Epic items stay Epic, since that is the maximum rarity. Adding enchantments multiple times does not increase the rarity of an item any further.

Rarity is intended to display anywhere the item name does.
It is shown in the following situations:
- Item tooltips in the inventory
- Item tooltips above the hotbar
- Item tooltips in the Minecraft:statistics screenTemplate:Only
- Death messages or Template:Cmd command in chatTemplate:Only
Rarity colors do not display in the following cases:
- Item tooltips from an Minecraft:item frame<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Contents tooltips from a Minecraft:shulker box<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- The CanPlaceOn/CanBreak tags of an item<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Item names in the Minecraft:Superflat customization screenTemplate:Only<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
Tiers
According to Mojang, the rarity tier of an item is determined based on the following guidelines:<ref>Template:Snap</ref><ref>Template:Cite</ref>
"
- Items and blocks become more rare depending on the following factors:
- The chance of finding it in a loot table, including mob drops
- The amount of travelling required to obtain it
- The difficulty of any obstacle that must be overcome to obtain it
- The possible amount of that item or block existing in the world
- Any item or block that can be crafted must inherit the highest rarity of its crafting ingredients
- For example, a Mace has an Epic rarity because one of its ingredients (the Heavy Core) has an Epic rarity
- Likewise, any crafted item that has only Common crafting ingredients must also be Common
The rarity of an item are manually and individually determined. They may not necessarily reflect on the actual practical difficulty of obtaining, as there are several inconsistencies. For example:
- All Minecraft:spawn eggs are considered Common, despite only being available from the Creative inventory (and two only being available through commands), which usually mandates an Epic rarity<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- The Minecraft:Potion of Luck, alongside its splash, lingering and tipped arrow derivatives, are considered Common, despite only being available from the Creative inventory, which usually mandates an Epic rarity<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Petrified oak slabs are considered Common, despite only being obtainable through commands, which usually mandates an Epic rarity<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- All Minecraft:netherite equipment is considered Common, even though the required Minecraft:upgrade template is Uncommon<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Lingering potions (and, by extension, Minecraft:tipped arrows) are Common, despite being made using Minecraft:dragon's breath, which is Uncommon<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Armor trim templates are usually considered at least Uncommon, yet any armor trimmed with them remains Common<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Decorated pots of any composition are considered Common, despite all Minecraft:pottery sherds being Uncommon<ref>Template:Bug</ref><ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Non-ominous Minecraft:banners are considered Common, even if they incorporate a Rare or Uncommon Minecraft:banner pattern<ref>Template:Bug</ref><ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Shields with Minecraft:ominous banners applied remain Common, despite ominous banners being Uncommon<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Firework stars (and, by extension, Minecraft:firework rockets) which use Minecraft:heads in the recipe are Common, despite heads being Uncommon or Rare<ref>Template:Bug</ref><ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Despite having the exact same tier and chances from an Minecraft:ominous vault, Minecraft:Music Disc Creator is Rare whereas the Minecraft:heavy core is Epic<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Despite having the exact same tier and chances from a Minecraft:vault, Minecraft:Music Disc Precipice is Uncommon whereas the Minecraft:Guster banner pattern is Rare<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Torchflowers and Minecraft:torchflower seeds as well as Minecraft:pitcher plants and Minecraft:pitcher pods are Common, despite Minecraft:sniffer eggs, which are Uncommon, being a mandatory prerequisite<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Player heads, despite only being obtainable through the Creative inventory, are simply Uncommon, rather than Epic<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- The Water, Fire, Earth and Wind Minecraft:paintings, which are exclusive to the Creative inventory, are Common, rather than Epic<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Wither skeleton skulls are the easiest mob head to obtain, yet are considered Rare, despite most other heads being Uncommon<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
- Minecraft:Wither roses are Common, despite requiring wither skeleton skulls to obtain, which are Rare<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
In addition, there exist many blocks which can only be encountered as placed blocks in Survival mode, whereas their item forms are strictly Creative-only, which are nonetheless classified as Common anyway:

Rare

This tier is mostly reserved for extremely difficult-to-obtain treasures and powerful equipment based on game progression. In Template:El, most administrative items also belong here.
All items of base (no Minecraft:enchantments) Epic rarity are Minecraft:non-renewable.Template:Note
