Template:Distinguish Tiers refer to the different levels and materials of Minecraft:tools and weapons.

Tiers

There are currently seven tiers in the game: wood, gold, stone, copper, iron, diamond, and netherite. The tier of an item determines its mining level, durability, Minecraft:mining efficiency, damage bonus, enchantability, and repair item. Note that all items Template:In have 1 more durability than listed.

Mining level

Template:Redirect Mining level is an internal numeric value used by Minecraft:pickaxes that represents an additional restriction to whether or not blocks drop anything when Minecraft:mined, in addition to requiring the correct tool type. While it is used only by pickaxes, other tools have mining level values internally that match their tier.

A block with the Minecraft:tag minecraft:needs_stone_tool<ref group=note name=mininglevel1>Includes Minecraft:iron ore, Minecraft:copper ore, Minecraft:lapis lazuli ore, Minecraft:deepslate iron ore, Minecraft:deepslate copper ore, Minecraft:deepslate lapis lazuli ore, Minecraft:blocks of copper, Minecraft:blocks of raw copper, Minecraft:blocks of iron, Minecraft:blocks of raw iron, Minecraft:blocks of lapis lazuli, Minecraft:cut copper and its variants, and Minecraft:lightning rods.</ref> requires a mining level of 1 or higher, a block with the tag minecraft:needs_iron_tool<ref group=note name=mininglevel2>Includes Minecraft:diamond ore, Minecraft:emerald ore, Minecraft:gold ore, Minecraft:redstone ore, Minecraft:deepslate diamond ore, Minecraft:deepslate emerald ore, Minecraft:deepslate gold ore, Minecraft:deepslate redstone ore, Minecraft:blocks of diamond, Minecraft:blocks of emerald, Minecraft:blocks of gold, and Minecraft:block of raw gold</ref> requires a mining level of 2 or higher, and a block with the tag minecraft:needs_diamond_tool<ref group=note name=mininglevel3>Includes Minecraft:ancient debris, Minecraft:obsidian, Minecraft:crying obsidian, Minecraft:blocks of netherite, Minecraft:respawn anchors, and Minecraft:glowing obsidianTemplate:Only.</ref> requires a tool with mining level 3 or higher. If a block has no mining level tags, it can be mined with a mining level of 0. There is an unused 4th mining level with the tag minecraft:needs_netherite_tool.

For a table of which mining level every block has, see Template:Slink. The "Metal" and "Rock" categories are split by mining level.

Affected items

All of the Minecraft:swords, Minecraft:axes, Minecraft:pickaxes, Minecraft:shovels, Minecraft:hoes, and Minecraft:spears use tiers.
