Template:For Template:Infobox block
Obsidian is a Minecraft:block found naturally in all Minecraft:dimensions, and created when Minecraft:water flows over a lava source in the Minecraft:Overworld, or as part of structures in Minecraft:the Nether and Minecraft:the End. It has high Minecraft:hardness and Minecraft:blast resistance, making it immune to normal Minecraft:explosions. Obsidian can be used to craft Minecraft:beacons, Minecraft:enchanting tables, and Minecraft:ender chests, and build the frame of a Minecraft:Nether portal. Obsidian is only obtainable with a diamond or netherite pickaxe.
Obtaining
Breaking
The suitable tool to break obsidian is the Minecraft:pickaxe. Obsidian needs to be broken using a Minecraft:diamond pickaxe or better, otherwise the breaking time will increase and the block drops nothing. Template:Breaking row Obsidian drops itself when it's destroyed.
Ender chest
8 obsidian blocks are dropped by an Minecraft:ender chest when broken without a tool enchanted with Minecraft:Silk Touch.
Post-generation
Obsidian is formed when flowing Minecraft:water touches a Minecraft:lava source block, and it can be found naturally where water from a Minecraft:spring or Minecraft:aquifer has flowed over a nearby Minecraft:lava pool. This provides a renewable way of obtaining obsidian, as lava can be farmed via Minecraft:cauldrons under Minecraft:pointed dripstone.
Obsidian is created when a Nether portal is generated in Minecraft:the Nether or the Minecraft:Overworld. This portal can then be mined, providing another way of obtaining obsidian renewably. Template:IN, if a Nether portal is generated midair, 4 extra obsidian is generated at the bottom of the portal.
When an Minecraft:entity enters the End via an End portal, it always spawns on a platform consisting of 25 obsidian. This platform can then be mined, and regenerates whenever an entity enters the End, providing another way of obtaining obsidian renewably. Obsidian pillars also regenerate when the Minecraft:ender dragon respawns.
Natural generation
Obsidian generates naturally in all Minecraft:dimensions:
- Minecraft:Overworld:
- Obsidian generates as part of Minecraft:ruined portals.
- A single obsidian block generates in some types of Minecraft:ocean ruin buildings.
- Obsidian generates in Minecraft:woodland mansions with a Minecraft:diamond block concealed by it. These are found in the secret "obsidian room" and "lava room", on the 2nd or 3rd floors.
- Minecraft:The Nether:
- Obsidian generates as part of ruined portals.
- Minecraft:The End:
- Solid Minecraft:End spikes can be found on the End's main island, generating all the way down to Y=0.
- 26 blocks of obsidian generate as a part of the Minecraft:End ship in an Minecraft:End city.
Generated loot
Bartering
Minecraft:Piglins may Minecraft:barter a block of obsidian when given a Minecraft:gold ingot with a chance of ~8.53% (Template:Frac).
Usage
Obsidian is useful for building Minecraft:explosion-resistant structures as it has a blast resistance of 1,200, the highest of all blocks obtainable in Minecraft:Survival mode (tied with Minecraft:crying obsidian, Minecraft:anvils, and Minecraft:netherite blocks). Obsidian also cannot be destroyed by the Minecraft:ender dragon. These qualities make obsidian an extremely effective defensive Minecraft:block, and it is commonly used in many bases in multiplayer servers as protection from griefers.
Obsidian is, however, not immune to the Minecraft:wither. Although black wither skulls have merely the explosive power of a Minecraft:ghast fireball, blue wither skulls ignore blast resistance, which means they can destroy obsidian. The wither's body can also destroy obsidian, either through block-breaking behavior upon taking damage, or its dash attackTemplate:Only. The wither is the only mob in the game that can break obsidian.
Obsidian is one of the two blocks an Minecraft:End crystal can be placed on; the other is Minecraft:bedrock.
Nether portals
Obsidian is used to create a Minecraft:Nether portal frame, which is then ignited using Minecraft:fire. The frame must be a vertical rectangle any size from 4×5 to 23×23. The corners of the frame are not required for an operational portal.
Crafting ingredient
Note blocks
Obsidian can be placed under Minecraft:note blocks to produce "bass drum" sounds.
Piston interactivity
Obsidian cannot be pushed by Minecraft:pistons. It also cannot be pushed nor pulled by Minecraft:sticky pistons.
Sulfur cube
Template:In development Minecraft:Sulfur cubes have the ability to absorb obsidian, either through picking it up or being interacted with it. This provides the regular/football effect to the mob when hitting it.

Trivia
- Obsidian is one of the hardest blocks to destroy in Minecraft. In reality, obsidian has characteristics similar to Minecraft:glass, being a brittle material.
- Geologically, obsidian is a volcanic glass that forms when lava is flash-cooled. It is the only igneous rock that's glassy.
- Other volcanic rocks in the game are Minecraft:andesite, Minecraft:basalt, and Minecraft:tuff.
- 71.25 times the explosive power of TNT would be required to destroy a block of obsidian; however, additional TNT increases the blast radius, not explosive power. It is possible to Template:Cmd an explosion strong enough to destroy obsidian.
- While working on the Minecraft:Texture Update, Minecraft:Jasper Boerstra expressed great difficulty over redesigning obsidian.<ref>Template:Tweet</ref>
