Revision as of 20:42, 9 April 2026

Template:Infobox block Netherrack is a frail stone Minecraft:block found abundantly in Minecraft:the Nether. Minecraft:Fire lit on top of netherrack burns indefinitely and cannot be extinguished by rain.

Obtaining

Breaking

The suitable tool to break netherrack is Minecraft:pickaxe. Netherrack needs to be broken using a pickaxe, otherwise the breaking time increases and the block drops nothing. Script error: No such module "breaking row". Netherrack drops itself when it's destroyed.

Natural generation

Netherrack makes up most of Minecraft:the Nether's terrain, and also generates as part of ruined portals in the Minecraft:Overworld and the Nether.

Netherrack generates as part of bridge and treasure room bastion remnants.

  1. REDIRECT Template:Block distribution

Nylium

Minecraft:Nylium drops a netherrack block when destroyed using a pickaxe that is not enchanted with Minecraft:Silk Touch.

Post-generation

Crimson or warped Minecraft:nylium transforms into netherrack if a solid, opaque Minecraft:block is directly above it, or when it is covered by Minecraft:snow.<ref>Template:Bug</ref>

in Template:Editions, netherrack generates as part of nether portals spawned floating, making netherrack renewable.

Usage

Netherrack can be used as a cheap building block. Because of its abundance and softness, it can be used to construct temporary structures that can be used for scaffolding, blockage, or other purposes.

When netherrack's top is lit on Minecraft:fire, the fire burns indefinitely and isn't put out by rain. This fire can spread to flammable blocks adjacent to the netherrack.

Template:Ctrl bone meal on netherrack placed next to warped nylium or crimson nylium transforms the netherrack into more warped or crimson nylium.

Note blocks

Netherrack can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sounds.

Sulfur cube

Template:Message box Template:Article other Sulfur cubes have the ability to absorb netherrack, either through picking it up or being interacted with it. This provides the regular/football effect to the mob when hitting it.

Trivia

  • The "blood" on the old netherrack texture was originally intended to be red moss.<ref>Template:Tweet</ref> Moreover, Notch was stating that Minecraft will remain blood-free shortly before the Halloween Update release, when the block was added.<ref>Template:Tweet</ref><ref>Template:Tweet</ref><ref>Template:Tweet</ref>
    • Despite being a common fan name before the addition of tooltips in Java Edition Beta 1.0, "bloodstone" has never been an official name for the block, with the earliest endorsed term being "netherstone".<ref name="netherstone"/>
  • Analyzing netherrack in a material reducer reveals it to be a volcanic silicate rock rich in mercury.Template:Only
