Wardstones are handy tools for anyone working with wards. Armour, when created on an anima-rich continent like Dragonwilds:Ashenfall, is infused with threads of enchantment that harness natural magic to provide an extra layer of protection for the wearer.
This protection depletes upon use, as the energy within the ward is expended on the effect. But the wardstone can rectify this situation… for a price.
The stone around the wardstone is hollow and more brittle than it seems, and the rune essence is carefully laid within it along with a final ingredient – a drop of the creators own blood. This blood, and the rune essence formation, creates a sort of harmonious connection between the bearer of the wardstone and the stone itself.
When the stone is broken, it activates the rune essence and draws Dragonwilds:anima in from the nearest pure source – the soul of the user.
Souls are containers of pure anima. They grow over time from experience and adventure, the more the bearer of said soul enriches their life with activity, the stronger the soul. This means that the damage the wardstone creates, whilst not insignificant, is easily repaired through the simple passage of time. Especially on Ashenfall, where merely surviving to the next hour is an adventure.
Wardstones are great in a pinch, but one must be careful not to use too many, less the damage they deal to themselves becomes too great.
