An escape pod is a pod that allows StarCitizen:Star Citizen players to get away from the spaceship in an emergency.<ref>Escape pod, Cambridge dictionary</ref> This allows to save the player from StarCitizen:death.<ref>Star Citizen: 10 for the Chairman - Episode 85, Star Citizen, Youtube, Jun 21, 2016</ref><ref>10 for the Chairman: Episode 12 (2014.03.17), Star Citizen, Youtube, Mar 17, 2014</ref> They're comparable to an ejection seat for larger ships that cannot have an ejection seat due to their size.<ref>Wingman's Hangar ep057 . When a ship will take critical damage, warning sirens will go off while exit lights will turn on pointing to the nearest escape pod.<ref name=":1" /><ref>Around the Verse: Episode 1.49 (2015.06.18), Star Citizen, Youtube, Jun 18, 2015</ref>

It can get away from the ship explosion and the source of the danger faster and further while providing some protection compared to using EVA to escape.<ref name=":0" /> The escape pod has a tracker or a tag allowing it to be found.<ref name=":0">10 for the Chairman: Episode 70, Star Citizen, Youtube, Nov 17, 2015</ref>

Other players will be able to conduct rescue operations to help out fellow players who are stuck in drop pods.<ref>Around the Verse: Episode 2.06, Star Citizen, Youtube, Nov 5, 2015</ref><ref>10 For the Writers Episode 03, Star Citizen, Youtube, Jun 2, 2015</ref>

If the player's escape pod is captured by another player or StarCitizen:NPC, the game will continue but there will be penalties depending on the player's situation. For example, if the player is a criminal and is delivered to a prison planet, the player will need to pay off the authorities to escape. If the player is sold into StarCitizen:slavery, their freedom will have to be bought.<ref>Template:Cite RSI</ref>

Escape pods can also be present on space stations and in places like StarCitizen:Orison.<ref>Inside Star Citizen: Armor Bearer | Spring 2021, Star Citizen, Youtube, Apr 29, 2021</ref>

Escape pods exit points can be more or less visible, some of them are palm line cutouts where a panel will pop off, and they might not exit the ship where players most expect it due to how the ship internals are routed. An escape pod on an upper floor might exit through the bottom of the ship rather than the top.<ref name=":1">Star Citizen Live: Invictus All-Ships Q&A, Star Citizen, Youtube, May 27, 2022</ref>

Variants

Escape pods are common / shared by manufacturer.<ref>10 for the Developers: Episode 07, Star Citizen, Youtube, Mar 21, 2016</ref>

in addition to dedicated escape pods, crew sleeping pods can also be individual escape pods.<ref>ATV Ship Shape: Anvil Crucible, Star Citizen, Youtube, Nov 19, 2015</ref>

Life pod

There is a two person variant of the escape pod available to the Warden, called the life pod module, which is interchangeable with other modules.<ref>Star Citizen: Around the Verse 3.9 - UK, Star Citizen, Youtube, Sep 29, 2016</ref><ref>Reverse the Verse: August 28th, 2015, Star Citizen, Youtube, Aug 30, 2015</ref>StarCitizen:Gurmukh Bhasin had the idea of instead of having coffin like escape pods where players just lay waiting to be rescued, it would be cool to have a full room that ejects, where the player can float around with their copilot in something that's slightly maneuverable.<ref>Around the Verse: Episode 1.58 (2015.08.27), Star Citizen, Youtube, Aug 27, 2015</ref>
