Surveying Overview

Surveying is a skill that produces surveys that lead to gems and minerals. Creating surveys increases the Surveying skill, while using the surveys increases ProjectGorgon:Geology (mineral surveys) or ProjectGorgon:Mining (mining surveys).

In-Game Description

Analyzing the land to locate valuable resources or important locations. Surveying has many uses, but is most commonly used to make resource maps for Geology and Mining.

Training Surveying

Once you get all three ingredients you can create a map by pushing the 'Survey' button on the recipe. The survey map will be placed in your inventory. You will need to be in the area (ie. ProjectGorgon:Serbule or ProjectGorgon:Serbule Hills) for which you want to create a survey.

Surveying Mechanics

Using A Basic Survey

Right click a survey in your inventory and a little red spot will temporarily blink on the minimap (it can be difficult to see if it is on a bright area, it seems to blend in). An on screen message will also give you approximate distances, though it is less practical. It can also help to enlarge your map window, by dragging the lower right corner.

Once you are near enough to the location indicated by the red spot (inside the 100x100 meter box around the treasure), you click the survey map again, and you will get your crystal or mining reward. At that time you will also get XP in either Geology or Mining, depending on the kind of survey.

Getting attacked while trying to use a survey will cancel it and force you to re-click, so try to kill any annoying mobs around you first.

Tip: A common technique for running multiple surveys is to sort the maps by the "quadrant" they're in on the map, and then run through each quadrant! Another helpful technique can be to mark the (closest) survey destinations with a Pin (Point of Interest dot) on the map; Once you are close to the dot you can right click the surveys to see if you are close enough. (Note be sure to remove the Pin after you collected the survey).

Speed Bonus

Whenever you finish a survey, a short timer starts. If you finish another survey within that time, you are rewarded with a speed bonus that gives you random minerals, ores, or other ingredients. The pool of random options depends on what zone you are in and what type of survey you're doing (mineral or mining). For example, completing a mineral survey in Serbule will be more likely to reward green or blue minerals, while Eltibule will likely reward orange and white. If you want to take advantage of the bonus, it is recommended to create a few Surveys, take a look at their locations, and plan which one should be done first, second, third, etc. in fast succession.

For Serbule and Eltibule, the timer is randomly chosen from a number between 1.5-3.5 minutes. In Kur, it's 2.5-4.5.

Mining Speed Bonuses

Map Type Possible Speed Bonus

Mineral Speed Bonuses

For mineral (gem) maps, the speed bonus is determined by location

Location Bonus
Serbule Hills
Serbule
Blue or Green Gems, Pieces of Green Glass and, more rarely, 'Ilmari' gems
Eltibule
Kur
Orange or White Gems and, more rarely, 'Ilmari' gems. Bonus Ilmari gems - poor return in Eltibule; best return is Kur Green surveys.

Using A Motherlode Map

Motherlode maps are more difficult than normal surveys, but give much greater rewards. When you use them, no red dot will appear on your minimap, and won't be given the exact location. You'll only be told the distance to the motherlode. If you're 1000 meters away, the motherlode could be on any point in the 1000-radius circle around you. When you find the motherlode, you'll be rewarded with 15-30 slabs, with a mean of 22 per motherlode survey.

Motherlode bonus ores

When you complete a motherlode survey you will receive slabs plus a bonus of a small amount of ore, slabs, dust, or other materials. The following table shows which materials you are likely to receive, arranged approximately from most likely to least likely.

Trivia

Players (in raven form or with flight potions) used to be able to use surveys while flying hundreds of feet above the ground! Now, you must be on the ground to actually dig up your reward.
