This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Minecraft:Java Edition pre-Classic releases.

Mobs

Mob	File:Old human mob walking animation.gif	Everywhere	None	The first mob.
Minecraft:Player	N/A	Anywhere	None	The only playable entity.

Minecraft:Air	File:Blank.png	Unobtainable	N/A	Used to signify that nothing is in the block space.
Minecraft:Cobblestone	File:Cobblestone JE1.png	Minecraft:Creative inventory	Any	Building material.
Minecraft:Dirt	File:Dirt JE1 BE1.png	Generates beneath grass blocks.	Any	Turns into grass when exposed to the sky, thus, it is the first crop.
Minecraft:Grass Block	File:Grass Block JE2.png	Generates on the surface.	Any	Building material. The grass dies when a block that is not a sapling or air is on the top side.
Minecraft:Sapling	File:Oak Sapling JE1.png	Creative inventory	Any	The first non-cubic block. Notch attempted to hide this block by assigning it to key 6 instead of 5 as he disliked the texture. Cannot grow into a tree since trees do not exist yet.
Minecraft:Stone	File:Stone JE2 BE1.png	Generates beneath dirt. Had a harsh and high contrast cobblestone-like texture in very early versions of pre-classic.	Any	Building material.
Minecraft:Wooden Planks	File:Oak Planks JE2.png	Creative inventory	Any	Building material. Strangely colored compared to modern versions.

Terrain generation

The game creates randomly generated 256x256 worlds out of blocks for you to interact with.
