KotHaar are eternal sentinels of the Dragonwilds:Elder Gods, found in the Dragonwilds:Umbral Sands region of Dragonwilds:Ashenfall. They were tasked with guarding the Dragonwilds:Lens, an Elder God device that kept Dragonwilds:Gielinor's sun from burning the world.Template:CiteText The dragon Dragonwilds:Fuzan later seized control of them, turning the magma that animates them against them through Fuzan's Mark, and the KotHaar carried the Lens to his volcano, where it was misaligned and the sun began to burn too brightly.Template:CiteJournalTemplate:CiteText Fuzan used the Lens to shield the volcano and to power the Mark until it was destroyed during Dragonwilds:Icthlarin's Little Helper.Template:CiteNPC

Biology and society

A KotHaar is a small core of consciousness wrapped in layers of magma and obsidian. That outer body matters little to it, and losing it brings neither pain nor any sense of loss.Template:CiteJournal A destroyed KotHaar is reduced to obsidian shards and has no afterlife to pass into. KotHaar nearing the end of their lives once made long pilgrimages through underground tunnels to the mainland, where they were reborn in the Template:RSL, the same place the TzHaar and TokHaar of mainland Gielinor are reconstituted from the bodies of their ancestors.Template:CiteJournalTemplate:CiteJournalTemplate:CiteJournal

KotHaar society has no leaders or politics, and each member fulfils a specific role so that the wider community can function.Template:CiteJournal Many of them work as though they share a single mind, yet they are bound by a common purpose rather than a common consciousness, and now and then an individual turns away from that purpose to wonder what else it might do.Template:CiteJournal

Castes

The roles within KotHaar society are divided among castes. The Tok-Xil, living artillery built by the Elder Gods, stand outside them.

Culture

Before Fuzan came to the region, the KotHaar read the passing months from the erosion of rocks they had stacked as a calendar, and their society kept libraries of books written on stone, though almost all of this culture has since worn away.Template:CiteNPCTemplate:CiteJournal What endures is their reverence for obsidian, which they regard as the flesh of their ancestors and a store of their memories, and each KotHaar carries the obsidian of its forebears with it.Template:CiteJournalTemplate:CiteJournal

History

Origins

The KotHaar, like their distant cousins the Template:RSL, were once part of the Template:RSL race, but split from it long ago to take up the protection of the Lens.Template:CiteJournal They have been present in Ashenfall for millennia, since its creation by the Elder Gods, and at first had no name, each being defined only by its role.Template:CiteJournalTemplate:CiteText The Tok-Xil stood guard over the Lens with them, though they had seen little combat in thousands of years by the time Fuzan arrived.Template:CiteJournal

Corruption by Fuzan

Fuzan, the youngest of Dragonwilds:Kuldra's brood, came to worship a entity who claimed to be a god, and under her tutelage he learned to wield his flames more effectively.Template:CiteJournal His mother had already given him his flames, and from his new patron he learned to place his seal on others, sharing with them some of his power and some of hers.Template:CiteJournal

The KotHaar-Kal were the first to fall. After studying the warrior caste for many days, Fuzan used the mastery of fire his mother had given him to seize the fire within their bodies, and with the Kal under his command he overpowered the rest of the KotHaar and bent them to his service.Template:CiteJournal Through the Mark, the magma that animates the KotHaar was turned against them, and the KotHaar-Hur were reduced from labourers to expendable fighters.Template:CiteJournal The KotHaar could bear more of the Mark's torment than the Dragonwilds:Moon Garou, the garou who settled in Umbral Sands, a difference Fuzan misjudged when he first applied the Mark to them.Template:CiteNPCTemplate:CiteJournal

Fuzan destroyed the tunnels that once carried dying KotHaar to the Elder Kiln, ending their pilgrimages to the mainland.Template:CiteJournal KotHaar are now forged in the Dragonwilds:Cave of Screams, west of the sunken pyramid, where each core is given a new body under Fuzan's control.Template:CiteNPCTemplate:CiteNPC Those forged there carry the material of their ancestors along with an unidentified additional substance, but keep no memory of the ancestors themselves.Template:CiteJournal

Forced against their will, the KotHaar carried the Lens from its resting place to Fuzan's volcano, where it was misaligned and turned against its purpose, and the sun began to burn too brightly. Some objected to this service and blamed the Cave of Screams for stripping away their choice.Template:CiteText One KotHaar mutinied outright and cut Fuzan with a glaive, a wound matched only by the claws of his mother.Template:CiteJournal

Sixth Age

During Dragonwilds:Icthlarin's Little Helper, Fuzan uses the KotHaar as a shield, and the player must fight through waves of them before facing the dragon. The Lens is destroyed during the quest, leaving the volcano unprotected.Template:CiteNPC

Relations with the Moon Garou

KotHaar raids on Moon Garou caravans have killed many garou and left others starving in lean seasons.Template:CiteText On Fuzan's behalf, the KotHaar demand goods from the Alcarrid camp and serve as his envoys to the elder of Dragonwilds:Manafem, and they also bar the way to ruins far to the south.Template:CiteNPCTemplate:CiteNPCTemplate:CiteNPC For their part, Moon Garou who defeat KotHaar do not wear their obsidian as armour, fearing possession by the fire spirit they believe animates the KotHaar.Template:CiteJournal
