Minecraft:Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a mineral required to Minecraft:enchant items in an Minecraft:enchanting table. It is also a major source of Minecraft:blue dye.

Obtaining

Mining

When mined with a Minecraft:stone pickaxe or better, Minecraft:lapis lazuli ore or deepslate lapis lazuli ore drops 4–9 lapis lazuli. With the Minecraft:Fortune III enchantment, a single block has a chance of dropping up to 36 items. The ore is most common at y level -2.

Trading

Aside from villager gifts in Java Edition, trading is the only renewable way to obtain lapis lazuli.

Template:IN, cleric Minecraft:villagers give Minecraft:players lapis lazuli if they have the Minecraft:Hero of the Village effect.

Usage

Enchanting

1–3 pieces of lapis lazuli are required to use an Minecraft:enchanting table to Minecraft:enchant an Minecraft:item. More specifically, the enchanting table UI shows 3 options (see Minecraft:Enchanting mechanics for details): the first, second, and third options cost 1, 2, and 3 lapis lazuli, respectively.

Crafting ingredient

Lapis lazuli can be used to make Minecraft:blocks of lapis lazuli and Minecraft:blue dye. Template:IN, it can also be used directly as a substitute for blue dye. Template:Crafting usage

Trivia

• In real life, lapis lazuli is a blue gem that can be ground and processed into ultramarine pigment. Lapis lazuli pigment has been famously used in the production of illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, and cave paintings. See the Wikipedia article for more information.
