The collaboration was announced on June 16, 2022, being set for preordering during Holiday 2022, and "with new products rolling out through 2023 and beyond." A chess set and "prop replicas" were explicily mentioned in the original press release.<ref>Template:Cite</ref>
According to Julian Montoya, Senior Vice President of The Noble Collection, Minecraft:Microsoft thought around 2022 was an appropriate time to branch into collectible merchandise since earlier teenagers playing Minecraft would have been older adults.<ref name="video">Template:Cite</ref> He said the company reached out to Microsoft and "struck a bit of luck" with a senior executive being a previous coworker of Montoya's at Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, who was "very familiar" with The Noble Collection's work and personally owned some of their products.<ref name="video original">Template:Cite</ref>
The Noble Collection's Minecraft line was first revealed to consumers at the 2022 Template:W.<ref name="video"/> It was first available exclusively for purchase at the 2023 New York Comic Con on October 12 and 13 at Booth #1061, with the Diamond Sword Collector Replica exclusively pre-orderable by attendees.<ref name="release">Template:Cite</ref> The collection at launch also had all items in the Illuminating Collector Replica series and the Minecraft Chess Set,<ref name="release"/> with Montoya claiming the products were made in close collaboration with Mojang's art team.<ref>Template:Cite</ref> The collection became available online and at retailers on October 14, 2023.<ref name="release"/>
