Phrenology Overview
Phrenology lets you study the skulls of many types of enemies. Skulls are broken up into 3 tiers (normal/impressive/astonishing), and as you level up in each subskill you can study better skulls of that type. Phrenology gives bonuses to Mentalism and Psychology, as well as Mentalism/Psychology critical hit chance for each type of mob.
You can study skulls from most humanoid creatures (animal skulls can be extracted, but there's currently no Phrenology subskill for them). Extraction requires some version of a Skull Extractor and success depends on your Butchering level.
In-Game Description
An understanding of how sentient creatures think and feel, based on careful study of the shape of their skulls. This base skill represents your overall Phrenological prowess. (Phrenology skills provide critical-hit chances to all Psychology and Mentalism attacks against the corresponding type of creature. Phrenology also has more esoteric uses.)

Studying Skulls
The actual act of studying requires Craniometers, which can be bought from Glajur or Amutasa. They have a 1% chance of breaking with every skull studied. Higher tiers of skulls require better Craniometers.
XP Gain
You get 20 XP for studying a normal skull, 50 for an Impressive skull, and 150 for an Astonishing skull.

Phrenology Experience Table
Phrenology is an umbrella skill. It has no experience table.
Trivia
Without any bonuses, it takes 113 skulls to reach level 12 in a Phrenology subskill (which is enough to unlock the second tier of recipes, the ones which use Impressive (and better) Humanoid Skulls).
Crafting xp boosts affect the xp gained from each skull.
Phrenology appears to be a parody of the real-world pseudoscience of the same name.
