StarCitizen:Private Server

From SAS Gaming Wiki
File:Star Citizen servers.png

Private Servers are the last in line of all planned features which will allow players to run their own private Star Citizen servers, including modding them and playing offline.<ref name=":1">StarCast 108 - Disco Lando, Cap Richard, Bzerker, Cliffy & Domo, geekdomo, YouTube, 10 janv. 2016</ref><ref name=":0">10 for the Chairman: Episode 47 (2014.12.01), Star Citizen, YouTube</ref>

Private servers won't have the same scope and scale as the StarCitizen:Persistent Universe, which is intended to use multiple servers that spin up dynamically.<ref name=":0" />

They are envisioned to be similar to offline servers of the game Freelancer, with a more static universe and the server being able to handle a fixed amount of players, modding, and stat changes. They are also also not intended to receive updates in the same cadence as the persistent universe.<ref>10 For the Chairman: Episode 67, Star Citizen, YouTube, 22 sept. 2015</ref><ref name=":0" />

Being able to keep private servers running was one of the reasons StarCitizen:Chris Roberts went with crowdfunding and decided to not use a big publisher such as EA or Activision, as this prevents the publisher from shutting down the game servers if they are not profitable anymore.<ref>Star Citizen - Interview feat. Development

Private servers are the absolute last thing on the list, there is nothing that comes after private servers as far as LIVE comes. CIG will be done with alpha and will be done with beta and we will be live in operation for some time before anybody at CIG looks at private servers. Nobody is even thinking about it, it‘s so far away.<ref name=":1" />

Quotes

It wont be as full featured as the persistent server but should have more functionality and persistenace than just a multiplayer battle instance a la BF3 or WoT

Trivia

  • In October 2026 a player made a StarCitizen:reddit post about a program that allowed to play Star Citizen offline which was downloaded through GitHub. CIG reached out to the subreddit team directly and made an informal DMCA for the post to be removed. The subreddit team took the post down while clarifying that while it's not beholden to CIGs ToS itself it is beholden to Reddit ToS that does allow copyright holders to request removal of content if it violates their copyright.<ref>Note on removed "offline CIG" post, r/starcitizen, reddit, 5 october 2026</ref>
