Plot

The game tells the story of a war in this solar system between familiar Earth nations.

Freelancer is the sequel to Starlancer, taking place some 800 years later, however the connection is an incredibly slight narrative thread that was added after the fact.<ref name=":0">Moron Writes Article, wcnews.com, December 9, 2025</ref>

Development

It was originally called Zero Tolerance which Warthog Games been pitching around the industry without any bites for several months when Chris Roberts signed a game deal with Microsoft. Microsoft, as a show of faith in Chris Roberts, purchased the game from Warthog.<ref name=":0" />

The team working on Starlancer was the same team that had been working on Privateer 2 at Digital Anvil, and afterwards started Warthog Games.<ref>Wing Commander combat information center, phone interview with Chris Roberts by Hadrian, 1999</ref> The core of that team moved on to become Traveler's Tales Fusion, and has since been brought into the Cloud Imperium Games family to work on StarCitizen:Squadron 42.<ref>The Stars His Destination: Chris Roberts from Origin to Star Citizen, 2014-09-13, archived</ref> StarCitizen:Martin Galway worked on the speech and sound effects.<ref>Martin Galway biography, MobyGames</ref>

The game introduced a video broadcast and a virtual newsletter informing the player about what's going on in the war, helping to see the bigger picture.

There was a Dreamcast version released.
