Leaves are transparent Minecraft:blocks that generate as part of Minecraft:trees and are sources of their respective Minecraft:saplings. They dissipate over time when not attached to Minecraft:logs, but persist when placed by Minecraft:players. Falling leaf Minecraft:particles occasionally drop from leaves.

Leaves from trees spontaneously decay (disappear) when they receive a block tick if they are not connected to any Minecraft:log or Minecraft:wood blocks, stripped or otherwise, either directly or via other leaf blocks, with a maximum distance of 6 blocksje or 4 blocksbe. je, this is determined using the prevents_nearby_leaf_decay Minecraft:block tag, whereas BE, the list of blocks is hardcoded. The distance is taxicab distance, but can cross corners. Leaves placed by players never decay. Leaves that decay, | Leaves that decay have the same drop chances as when broken by players, yielding Minecraft:saplings 5% (1) of the time, sticks 2% of the time, and otherwise nothing. Jungle leaves drop saplings 2.5% (1) of the time. Oak and dark oak leaves also have a separate but additional 0.5% (1) chance of dropping an Minecraft:apple, making it extremely rare but possible for a single leaf to drop a sapling, two sticks and an apple at the same time. Leaves that are burned do not yield saplings or apples.
Leaves are always Minecraft:transparent to Minecraft:light but cannot be seen through when the Minecraft:graphics is set to "Fast" or fancy leaves are turned off. Leaves that are entirely surrounded by full blocks also render opaque in Bedrock Edition. They diffuse sky light, causing the shadows they cast under trees.

In any biome with a base temperature of below 0.15, all leaves | In any biome with a base temperature of below 0.15, all biome-tinted leaves gradually fade to white once Minecraft:snowfall begins, giving them a frosted appearance for the storm's duration. During transition, the white color is blended with the regular color in eight steps. After snowfall ends, leaves gradually fade back to their normal coloration.
This does not affect leaves in biomes with a higher base temperature, even at altitudes that allow snowfall. Cherry, azalea, flowering azalea, pale oak, and poplar leaves are not affected as their colors are based on the texture instead of colormaps. The change is entirely invisible to the client if the graphics mode is set to Simple, though it still takes place, and leaves are the correct color phase for the time if the option is re-enabled.

Template:For Template:Infobox block Leaves are transparent Minecraft:blocks that generate as part of Minecraft:trees and are sources of their respective Minecraft:saplings. They dissipate over time when not attached to Minecraft:logs, but persist when placed by Minecraft:players. Falling leaf Minecraft:particles occasionally drop from leaves.

Natural generation
Each type of leaves occurs naturally on their respective type of Minecraft:trees throughout the Minecraft:Overworld. In addition to this:
Oak leaves generate as part of:
- Minecraft:Jungle bushes
- Plains Minecraft:villages
- Minecraft:Trial chambers
- Minecraft:Abandoned camps
Spruce leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:old growth pine taigas, Minecraft:old growth spruce taigas, Minecraft:snowy taigas, Minecraft:taigas and Minecraft:windswept forests.
Dark oak leaves generate as part of Minecraft:woodland mansions.
Birch leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:birch forests, Minecraft:flower forests and Minecraft:forests.
Jungle leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:bamboo jungles.
Acacia leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:savannas.
Mangrove leaves generate as part of trial chambers.
Cherry leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:cherry groves.
Pale oak leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in Minecraft:pale gardens.
Poplar leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in dappled forests.
Post-generation
Template:See also Leaves generate as part of trees grown from Minecraft:saplings, Minecraft:azaleas, or Minecraft:mangrove propagules.
Usage
Leaves from trees spontaneously decay (disappear) when they receive a block tick if they are not connected to any Minecraft:log or Minecraft:wood blocks, stripped or otherwise, either directly or via other leaf blocks, with a maximum distance of 6 blocksTemplate:Only or 4 blocksTemplate:Only. Template:IN, this is determined using the Template:Cd Minecraft:block tag, whereas Template:In, the list of blocks is hardcoded. The distance is taxicab distance, but can cross corners. Leaves placed by players never decay. Minecraft:Bamboo does not count as a log for this purpose.
Leaves that decay have the same drop chances as when broken by players, yielding Minecraft:saplings 5% (Template:Frac) of the time, sticks 2% of the time, and otherwise nothing. Jungle leaves drop saplings 2.5% (Template:Frac) of the time. Oak and dark oak leaves also have a separate but additional 0.5% (Template:Frac) chance of dropping an Minecraft:apple, making it extremely rare but possible for a single leaf to drop a sapling, two sticks and an apple at the same time.
Leaf blocks can be waterlogged although they are full blocks. Water does not spread outTemplate:Only, and waterlogged leaves follow the same rules as any other waterlogged block. When Minecraft:concrete powder is placed on any side of the waterlogged leaves it turns into Minecraft:concrete, and the leaf block remains waterlogged.
Although leaves behave as solid blocks by preventing entities from moving through them, they also behave as non-solid, in that leaves do not prevent chests from opening.
Applying Minecraft:bone meal to mangrove leaves with a space beneath produces a hanging Minecraft:mangrove propagule with age=0.
Smelting ingredient
Redstone component
Template:Exclusive The state of a leaves block—including a player-placed block—changes after 1 game tick (half a redstone tick) when the distance to the nearest Minecraft:log or Minecraft:wood block changes, up to 6 blocks of leaves away. Minecraft:Observers facing away from the leaves detect this change and transmit a redstone signal in the same game tick, making leaves useful for redstone signal transmission.
Piston interactivity
Leaves are destroyed when pushed by Minecraft:pistons. They do not stick to Minecraft:sticky pistons, Minecraft:slime blocks, or Minecraft:honey blocks.
Composting
Most types of leaves have a 30% chance of increasing the compost level in a Minecraft:composter by 1. A stack of leaves yields an average of 3.05 Minecraft:bone meal. The exception are flowering azalea leaves, which have a 50% chance of increasing the compost level (a stack of those yields 4.92 pieces of bone meal on average).
Bees
Flowering azaleas leaves and cherry leaves function like any other Minecraft:flowers in their interaction and uses with Minecraft:bees.
Color
Template:Main Template:Needs render
- In the inventory, Template:BlockSprite oak, Template:BlockSprite jungle, Template:BlockSprite acacia, and Template:BlockSprite dark oak leaves are colored Template:Color in Java Edition, or use pre-colored textures in Bedrock Edition.
- In the inventory, Template:BlockSprite mangrove leaves are colored Template:Color in Java Edition, or use pre-colored textures in Bedrock Edition..
- Template:BlockSprite Spruce leaves are colored Template:Color, and are not affected by biome or inventory color.
- Template:BlockSprite Birch leaves are colored Template:Color, and are not affected by biome or inventory color.
- Template:BlockSprite Azalea, Template:BlockSprite flowering azalea, Template:BlockSprite cherry, Template:BlockSprite pale oak, and Template:BlockSprite poplar leaves are not colored.
Biome colors
These values are generated by the biome dyeing algorithm. Template:IN, biome colors also appear on Minecraft:maps.

In any biome with a base temperature of below 0.15, all biome-tinted leaves gradually fade to white once Minecraft:snowfall begins, giving them a frosted appearance for the storm's duration.
Particles
All types of leaves (except spruce)Template:Only have their own falling leaves particle which are produced underneath the leaf block, where they slowly fall to the ground.
Leaf particles from biome-tinted leaves have the same color as the leaves they're falling from, which can change with the biome or during snowfall.Template:Only Cherry, pale oak, and all poplar leaves have pre-colored textures, azalea leaves use a hard-coded color.Template:Info needed

Ambient sounds
Poplar leaves occasionally emit ambient sounds when they are surrounded by a non-stripped Minecraft:log of any kind and 3 poplar leaves of the same color in all 4 horizontal directions.
The ambient sounds emitted can be heard from up to 12 blocks.

Issues
Trivia
- Occasionally, leaves grow through other blocks, acting as though they are still connected to the tree. They may also completely replace blocks they try to grow into.
- Some trees seem to occasionally drop apples or saplings without being destroyed due to creation of leaf blocks not supported by logs.
