When placed below [[Minecraft:Potent Sulfur|potent sulfur]] below a water source with a height of 1 to 4 blocks, Magma blocks may cause potent sulfur to occasionally erupt. During an eruption, particles forming a geyser appear at the surface of the water and push any entities within it (including underwater) upwards. A full cycle occurs every 300 to 1200 [[Minecraft:game tick]]s (15 to 60 seconds), while the eruption phase lasts between 20 and 100 game ticks (1 to 5 seconds).
When a block of potent sulfur is placed, two random values are assigned to it: a dormant value (between 15 and 30) and an eruption value (between 1 and 2). The intervals between the dormant state and the eruption state depend on the height of the water column above the potent sulfur and these two values:
* dormant phase duration (in seconds): <math>(10 \times (height - 1) + dormant\_value) \times 20</math>;
* eruption phase duration (in seconds): <math>(height - 1) + eruption\_value</math>.
The height of the geyser depends on the height of the water column: <math>5 \times height</math> (in blocks).

Although geyser particle effects are stopped by all collidable blocks, the upward force will pass through certain transparent blocks such as [[Minecraft:glass]] and [[Minecraft:copper grate]]s.
Geysers generate naturally on the surface as part of [[Minecraft:sulfur spring]]s due to them featuring magma blocks and potent sulfur. The [[Minecraft:sulfur pool]]s within [[Minecraft:sulfur caves]] do not feature magma blocks underneath their potent sulfur, and thus geysers cannot be found naturally in sulfur caves.

It deals burning damage while stood on, which can be prevented by Template:Control. Underwater magma blocks produce Minecraft:bubble columns that pull Minecraft:entities downward and provide air.

Overworld

In the Overworld, magma blocks generate at the bottom of water Minecraft:aquifers in Minecraft:underwater magma in clusters of 1–8 blocks, and in Minecraft:sulfur springsTemplate:Upcoming in clusters of 1–3 blocks.

Magma blocks also generate as a part of Minecraft:ocean ruins, Minecraft:ruined portals that are not in cold biomes, and the eruption room found in Minecraft:trial chambers.

The Nether

Magma blocks generate in Minecraft:the Nether in the form of ore features. Template:IN, it attempts to generate 4 times per Minecraft:chunk in sizes of 0–160, from Minecraft:altitudes Y=27 to Y=36 in all biomes. It can only replace Minecraft:netherrack. Template:IN, it attempts to generate 9 times per Minecraft:chunk in sizes of 0–106, from Minecraft:altitudes Y=23 to Y=36 in all biomes. It can replace Minecraft:netherrack and Minecraft:blackstone.

Magma blocks generate as part of Minecraft:deltas in Minecraft:basalt deltas biomes, replacing some of the lava.

Magma blocks also generate as a part of hoglin stable and treasure room Minecraft:bastion remnants, as well as all ruined portals in this dimension.

Damage

Magma blocks damage most living entities standing on top of them, even if underwater, dealing Template:Hp of fire damage every Minecraft:tick, which in practice is reduced to once every half-second with Minecraft:damage immunity. Walking into the side of a magma block doesn't cause damage. Damage from magma blocks does not reduce Minecraft:durability in Minecraft:netherite armor. Because magma blocks deal fire damage, it can be reduced by Minecraft:armor, the Minecraft:Resistance effect, and Minecraft:Protection/Minecraft:Fire Protection enchantments, and can be completely negated by the Minecraft:Fire Resistance effect. Unlike other sources of fire damage, Minecraft:sneaking and the Minecraft:Frost Walker enchantment can also grant immunity to damage from magma blocks.

Any mobs immune to fire damage cannot take damage from magma blocks. However, a few mobs like Minecraft:shulkers cannot take magma block damage despite not having natural immunity to fire.

Magma blocks do not set mobs or players on fire and thus do not cook the animals that they kill, nor do they destroy items.

Blocks that are the height of a Minecraft:trapdoor or lower (such as snow layers, Minecraft:carpets, Minecraft:repeaters, or Minecraft:comparators) do not prevent a magma block from damaging mobs and players above it.<ref>Template:Bug</ref><ref>Template:Bug</ref> However, a sunken Minecraft:boat on top of the magma block prevents damage.

There are a few specific Minecraft:death messages associated with magma blocks. If a player or named pet is killed simply from standing on the block, the death message displayed in the chat is: "[player] discovered the floor was lava". If a player or named pet was attacked and knocked back to their death onto magma blocks, the message is: "[player] walked into danger zone due to [player/mob]".

Behavior

Magma blocks emit a Minecraft:light level of 3. They do not melt Minecraft:ice or Minecraft:snow.

Magma blocks emit smoke particles under rainfall, much like Minecraft:lava.

Making walls out of magma blocks prevents Minecraft:spiders from climbing them.Template:Only

Mobs try to avoid walking over magma blocks but still walk over them if no other path is found. Most mobs do not spawn on magma blocks (exceptions are Minecraft:magma cubes, Minecraft:zombified piglins, Minecraft:ghasts, and Minecraft:squid).

When a magma block's top is set on Minecraft:fire, the fire burns indefinitely, similar to Minecraft:netherrack.

Bubble columns

When a water source is directly above a magma block, a whirlpool bubble column is created, going down from the highest source block. Anything encountering the bubble column is pulled down, including items, boats, players, and mobs.

A player can restore breath underwater by entering a magma block's bubble column.

When placed below potent sulfur below a water source with a height of 1 to 4 blocks, Magma blocks may cause potent sulfur to occasionally erupt.
