Minecraft contains many music tracks, which play in various places in the game, including on the main menu, in Minecraft:Creative mode, in Minecraft:the Nether, in Minecraft:the End, and during the credits. The music tracks in the game are composed by Minecraft:C418, Minecraft:Lena Raine, Minecraft:Kumi Tanioka, Minecraft:Samuel Åberg, Minecraft:Aaron Cherof, Minecraft:Amos Roddy, and Minecraft:Hyper Potions.
Playing
Music tracks can play at various points during gameplay. Some types of music are triggered by events, while others play randomly while certain criteria are met. The song "Alpha" always plays instantly during the credits, and the song "Boss" always plays instantly while the player is in Minecraft:the End if the Minecraft:ender dragon is undefeated or resummoned. Both of these tracks start playing in place of any already playing music. If the player is in the End and the ender dragon has been defeated, the normal End track plays 5 to 20 minutes after any currently playing tracks are finished.
If the player is underwater in an Minecraft:ocean or Minecraft:river biome, random underwater tracks play randomly 10 to 20 minutes after any currently playing tracks are finished.<ref name=":1">Template:Bug</ref>
If none of the previous criteria are met, but the player is in the Nether, a random general Minecraft:Nether track or a Nether Minecraft:biome-specific track plays, except Minecraft:warped forests, which don't have any music. If the player is not in the Nether and is currently in Minecraft:Creative modeTemplate:Note, a random track plays (Creative only on Bedrock). If the player is not in Creative but is currently playing (i.e., not on the menu screen), a random general track plays. These tracks all play 10 to 20 minutes after any currently playing tracks are finished.
If a music track is playing while the player is entering a Minecraft:pale garden, it fades into silence. The music resumes when the player exits the biome.
If the player is on the menu screen, a random menu track starts playing after 1 to 30 seconds.
Menu music stops playing Template:In when the player leaves the Minecraft:main menu and stops playing Template:In when a loading screen finishes. Game music stops playing when the player quits the world. When the game is paused, game music continues to play Template:In, while Template:In it pauses and resumes when the player exits the pause menu.
Music also stops playing on lagging for a very long time, including under the highly complicated calculations like exploding a lot of Minecraft:TNT continuously, and when the memory usage is close to the allocation point and do not clear out for many seconds or even minutes.Template:Verify
All music as well as sounds in Minecraft are stored in the sound directory. Template:IN, however, the sound files are obfuscated and cannot be directly accessed. To get around with this, the sound directory can be extracted by the methods showed in Minecraft:Tutorial:Sound directory. Template:IN, the music files are not obfuscated and can be found directly at Template:Cd.
Template:IN, the player can change how frequently music plays by changing the "Music Frequency" setting in the "Music & Sounds" menu.
Template:IN, when the "Show Music Toast" setting is enabled in the "Music & Sounds" menu, a toast showing the track name and artist appears on-screen when a new track starts playing. This toast is also shown in the Minecraft:pause menu.

Legacy Console Edition
The Minecraft:Legacy Console Edition versions of the game had a lot of custom music created for its many Mash-up packs and Minecraft:mini games composed primarily by Minecraft:Gareth Coker, with some earlier Minecraft:Mash-up pack work<ref>https://twitter.com/4JStudios/status/657528284218052609</ref> and likely early Minecraft:Battle mini game workTemplate:Note<ref>"10 Years of the Minecraft Soundtrack | C418 INTERVIEW" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mn47MqhbFY&t=2627s</ref> done by Minecraft:C418.
Mash-Up Packs
Festive Mash-Up Pack
This soundtrack was written by Minecraft:C418 and features tracks from Minecraft:Minecraft - Volume Beta and Christmas inspired arrangements of other tracks from Minecraft:Minecraft - Volume Beta. These special arrangements do not appear on an album and do not have names. The tracks for the battle map were written by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and appeared on the Minecraft: Battle & Tumble (Original Soundtrack) album. These files are found in DLC/Festive/DataTemplate:Note.
Greek Mythology Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker, with the exception of one track, and was inspired by ancient Greek literature and culture. The menu track for this pack is Seikilos' Epitaph, which is the oldest surviving complete musical composition in human history, understood to be written by a man named Seikilos. These files are found in DLC/Greek Mythology/Data.
Halloween 2015 Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was written by Minecraft:C418 inspired by Halloween. Unlike other original Mash-Up Packs, none of these tracks have an official release nor names. The tracks for the battle map were written by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and appeared on the Minecraft: Battle & Tumble (Original Soundtrack) album. These files are found in DLC/Halloween 2015/DataTemplate:Note.
Chinese Mythology Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and was inspired by Chinese literature and culture. Unlike most soundtracks written for the game, it features recurring motifs, in this case from the track "Xuanzang." These files are found in DLC/Chinese Mythology/Data.
Norse Mythology Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and was inspired by Norse literature and culture. These files are found in DLC/Norse Mythology/Data.
Egyptian Mythology Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and was inspired by Egyptian literature and culture. These files are found in DLC/Egyptian Mythology/Data.
Pirates of the Caribbean Mash-Up Pack
This original soundtrack was composed by Minecraft:Gareth CokerTemplate:Note and was inspired by Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and its associated film soundtracks. Despite being a licensed mash-up pack, music from the source material was not used. This is the only complete original score written for Template:LCE that has not been published as an album, and there are no titles for the tracks either. These files are found in DLC/Pirates of the Caribbean/Data.
Mini Games
The mini games for Minecraft:Legacy Console Edition also have their own unique soundtracks, composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker and Minecraft:C418Template:Note. Each map is assigned a set of music tracks, either by using a Mash-Up pack that supports custom music, or a hardcoded TrackList for packs that don't by using the map's ThemeID. These tracks can be found in the music folder, or audio folder for Minecraft:Xbox 360 Edition prior to Minecraft:TU57, at the root of the game files. Mini game tracks that are part of a Minecraft:Mash-up pack can be found inside of the Data folder inside of its respective DLC folder.
Battle
These music tracks play in the Battle mini game.
Tumble
These music tracks play in the Tumble mini game. While there were map themes made for special occasions and holidays, there were no unique tracks made for them. If a Mash-Up pack with custom music was used and it lacked Tumble music definition, it would default to using the Minecraft:Overworld music from that pack. Otherwise the default themes would play.

Composers
Originally, all of Minecraft's music was composed by Minecraft:C418. According to Mojang, as the game got more popular (specifically starting with the Minecraft:Update Aquatic<ref>Template:Mcnet</ref>), others were hired to produce music and soundtracks for the game. However, C418 has cited legal disputes between himself and Microsoft, who wanted to own the music he produced outright, as the real reason for additional composers.Template:Citation needed Since the Minecraft:Nether Update, new tracks composed by Minecraft:Lena Raine, Minecraft:Kumi Tanioka, Minecraft:Samuel Åberg, Minecraft:Aaron Cherof, Minecraft:Amos Roddy and Minecraft:Hyper Potions were added. Samuel Åberg also composed many recent ambient sounds. Original music created for mash-up packs and Minigames, created by Minecraft:4J Studios for Minecraft:Legacy Console Edition, were composed by Minecraft:Gareth Coker.

Trivia
- "The End" is heavily built on modified versions of several tracks from "Minecraft - Volume Alpha".<ref>https://genius.com/C418-the-end-lyrics#about - Genius's description</ref>
- "calm3.ogg", or "Sweden", is a Template:W, with a changing melody over a repeated bass line.
- On April Fools' Day 2014, Mojang played a bunch of villager themed pranks on the players, including temporarily replacing the track "hal1.ogg", or "Subwoofer Lullaby", with a version that had a villager singing along, as well as temporarily replacing all the menu songs with the villagers singing the Game Of Thrones theme song. This was reverted on April 2, 2014.
- hal3.ogg (Haggstrom) is in Template:W (precisely 7/4 time).
- According to C418, the track "Mice on Venus" (game filename is piano3.ogg) was originally a short piano solo, but was then changed later in Minecraft's development and an addendum was added, which made the track what the game has currently.<ref>Template:Cite</ref>
- The Minecraft:warped forest and Minecraft:pale garden are the only biomes in the game devoid of music, but they accomplish this in different ways.
- The warped forest simply doesn't play music when the game would normally start playing a new track, but any music that started playing before entering a warped forest will continue playing. A sound event does exist for it (named
music.nether.warped_forestTemplate:In andmusic.game.warped_forestTemplate:In), but it is unused by default. - The pale garden has special behavior which fades out any currently-playing tracks upon entering the biome.
- The warped forest simply doesn't play music when the game would normally start playing a new track, but any music that started playing before entering a warped forest will continue playing. A sound event does exist for it (named
- Despite never being implemented, the Minecraft:Legacy Console Edition code references the cancelled Build Off Minecraft:mini game with a call for
MG04_01.binka. If the game's music player state is modified to be Build Off, the game will actually search for and play the file if it exists. - Overworld music does not play in Minecraft:Creative mode in Minecraft:Legacy Console Edition.
- Some of the music tracks have a special title:
- The word "Shuniji" (主虹) means "primary rainbow" in Japanese.
- The title of the track "So Below" is a reference to "Template:W"<ref>Template:Tweet</ref>, a phrase associated with Hermeticism that is derived from a passage from the Template:W, relating to the secrets of creating the Template:W.
- The word Template:W is Latin for "redness". The term was adopted by alchemists to refer to the final stage of creating the philosopher's stone.<ref>Template:Tweet</ref>
- The word Template:W (χρυσοποιία) is an alchemical term that describes the creation of the philosopher's stone, or the transmutation of a given object into gold.<ref>Template:Tweet</ref>
- "Bromeliad" refers to a taxonomic family of flowering plants. This family contains Minecraft:pitcher plants and species resembling Minecraft:torchflowers.
