Minecraft:Brown Mushroom
More actions
A brown mushroom is a variety of Minecraft:fungus that grows and spreads in dark areas. Brown mushrooms can be grown into Minecraft:huge mushrooms with bone meal.
Obtaining
Breaking
Brown mushrooms can be instantly mined with any tool, including by hand.
A brown mushroom also breaks instantly and drops as an item if:
- the block below it is moved or destroyed
- a Minecraft:fluid flows over it
- a block next to it changes state, but only when it is not on Minecraft:podzol, Minecraft:mycelium, or Minecraft:nylium and light level is 13 or higher
Natural generation
Brown mushrooms naturally generate in poorly lit areas (Minecraft:light level of 12 or less). If this condition is met, each Minecraft:chunk has a Template:Frac (25.0%) chance to generate brown mushrooms in the form of Minecraft:random patches.<ref>Template:IN, they rarely generate because they cannot generate underground due to Template:Bug.</ref>
Brown mushrooms also generate on the surface of a swamp under the trees, Minecraft:old growth spruce taiga, Minecraft:old growth pine taiga, or Minecraft:mushroom fields biome, along with anywhere in Minecraft:the Nether. Unlike plants, they are able to generate on top of nearly any block type.
Template:IN, brown mushrooms are commonly found in patches on the Minecraft:Nether roof, and alongside red mushrooms are the only blocks that can generate there.
Brown mushrooms also generate inside "mushroom farm" rooms in Minecraft:woodland mansions.
Minecraft:Fallen trees can have up to 2 mushrooms generated on them.
Huge mushrooms
Breaking a Minecraft:brown mushroom block drops 0-2 brown mushrooms. Minecraft:Fortune does not affect the drop rate of mushrooms in any form.<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
Mob loot
Minecraft:Shearing a brown Minecraft:mooshroom drops 5 brown mushrooms and permanently turns it into a normal Minecraft:cow.
Shearing a Minecraft:bogged drops 2 mushrooms, both of which can be brown.
An Minecraft:enderman holding a brown mushroom drops it upon death.
Template:IN, Minecraft:wandering traders have a chance of 8.5% (increased by 1% per level of Minecraft:Looting) to drop 3 brown mushrooms when killed while showing the item as trade offer, if the player holds an Minecraft:emerald.

Usage
Planting
Mushrooms can be planted and grown on blocks that have a full top surface in Minecraft:light levels below 13 and not directly underneath the sky. They cannot be planted on the top surfaces of slabs or Minecraft:stairs.<ref>Template:Bug</ref> For more information, see Minecraft:Opacity/Placement. If planted on Minecraft:mycelium, Minecraft:podzol or Minecraft:nylium, they can stay planted in any light level, including skylight. Both brown and red mushrooms grow at the same rate regardless of the light level.<ref name="Fully-Automated Tests of Mushroom Growth at Different Light Levels Using BUD Switch Harvester">http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ALkf-b7MbBI&t=864s</ref><ref name="Large scale automated test with additional info">Template:Ytl</ref>
Huge mushrooms
Template:Main When Minecraft:bone meal is applied to a brown mushroom, the mushroom has a chance to grow into a brown Minecraft:huge mushroom, provided that it is on a proper block (Minecraft:grass block, Minecraft:dirt, Minecraft:coarse dirt, Minecraft:rooted dirt, Minecraft:mud, Minecraft:muddy mangrove roots, Minecraft:moss block, or Minecraft:pale moss block at a light level of 12 or below; on Minecraft:podzol, Minecraft:mycelium or Minecraft:nylium at any light level) and is free of Minecraft:solid blocks within 5 blocks directly above the mushroom.
Spread
When receiving a Minecraft:random tick, a brown mushroom has a 4% chance of spreading to a nearby block (including even above and below diagonally) if there are fewer than five brown mushrooms in a 9×9×3 volume around the original brown mushroom.
Light source
Brown mushrooms emit a barely visible Minecraft:light level of 1.<ref>Template:Bug</ref> However, they do not emit light in flower pots.<ref>Template:Bug</ref>
Decoration
Brown mushrooms can be planted in a Minecraft:flower pot.
Crafting ingredient
Composting
Placing a brown mushroom into a Minecraft:composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.
