Items usually exist in the player's Minecraft:inventory, or any external inventories like Minecraft:chests. When hovered or selected in a GUI, items display their name and additional information in a Minecraft:tooltip. Players can move items through the functionality of the GUI — like Minecraft:smelting in a furnace or equipping in armor slots — or put them in the Minecraft:hotbar. During gameplay, the player can select a hotbar slot to hold the item in the hand, while it briefly displays its name on the Minecraft:HUD, in order to use it.
Some items when used, place a Minecraft:block or Minecraft:entity (minecart, spawn eggs, etc.) version of themselves into the game Minecraft:world. Put simply, they are an item when in the Minecraft:inventory, and a block when placed. For example, Minecraft:boats turn into an entity when placed, and Minecraft:cacti turn into a block when placed. There are also items which can be used for specific functionality (like consuming food), or items that have no use but are required for recipes (like smelting) to create other items.

Blocks and entities can drop items into the world when broken/killed or in specific circumstances. This is a Minecraft:dropped item entity represented by a sprite that floats above the ground. Players can also choose to drop held items or any item in a GUI. It remains for 5 minutes in a loaded Minecraft:chunk before despawning (except for the Minecraft:Nether star), unless the player walks over it to pick it up, it is picked up by a mob, Minecraft:hopper or Minecraft:minecart with hopper, or it is destroyed by Minecraft:fire, Minecraft:lava, Minecraft:cactus, Minecraft:explosion, Minecraft:void, or kill.
Dropped Minecraft:netherite items cannot be destroyed by Minecraft:fire or Minecraft:lava, and dropped Minecraft:Nether stars cannot be destroyed by explosions. | Dropped Minecraft:netherite items cannot be destroyed by Minecraft:fire or Minecraft:lava, and dropped Minecraft:Nether stars cannot be destroyed by explosions.

Several items have dedicated Minecraft:item textures that are one pixel thick when in the world, but some items corresponding to blocks use the block textures to render as 3D object. A solid white block is rendered in the inventory as follows:
| |||
* Top: #FFFFFF | |||
* Left: #CECECE | |||
* Right: #9E9E9E | |||
be, blocks that emit Minecraft:light are not shaded, making them appear much brighter.
Many item textures are Minecraft:animated, dynamically colored, or have an Minecraft:enchantment glint effect. Items are displayed in the world by Minecraft:entities that have then equipped or are holding them: a Minecraft:dropped item, player hand, armor stand, and various Minecraft:mobs that can hold items (see Minecraft:Display of items by entities). Some Minecraft:blocks can also display items:
* Campfire | |||
* Soul Campfire | |||
* Item Frame | |||
* Glow Item Frame — items are not shaded by environmental lighting, making the "glow in the dark".
* Shelf | |||
* Suspicious Gravel | |||
* Suspicious Sand | |||
* Vault | |||
Displayed items, either on these blocks, the hand (both third-person and first-person), or thrown, are rendered in-game with MERS texture sets with Minecraft:Vibrant Visuals, and can show shadows, reflections, or caustics. Various items have emissive lighting and glow in the dark.

| |||

Template:Relevant category
An item is an object that can exist within Minecraft:inventories of Minecraft:players, Minecraft:mobs or Minecraft:armor stands; in various Minecraft:containers (like Minecraft:chests or Minecraft:droppers), as well as in Minecraft:item frames, Minecraft:glow item frames, and Minecraft:shelves.
Behavior
Items usually exist in the player's Minecraft:inventory, or any external inventories like Minecraft:chests. When hovered or selected in a GUI, items display their name and additional information in a Minecraft:tooltip. Players can move items through the functionality of the GUI — like Minecraft:smelting in a furnace or equipping in armor slots — or put them in the Minecraft:hotbar. During gameplay, the player can select a hotbar slot to hold the item in the hand, while it briefly displays its name on the Minecraft:HUD, in order to use it.
Some items when Template:Control, place a Minecraft:block or Minecraft:entity (minecart, spawn eggs, etc.) version of themselves into the game Minecraft:world.
Thrown items
Blocks and entities can drop items into the world when broken/killed or in specific circumstances. This is a Minecraft:dropped item entity represented by a sprite that floats above the ground. Players can also choose to Template:Control held items or any item in a GUI. It remains for 5 minutes in a loaded Minecraft:chunk before despawning (except for the Minecraft:Nether star), unless the player walks over it to pick it up, it is picked up by a mob, Minecraft:hopper or Minecraft:minecart with hopper, or it is destroyed by Minecraft:fire, Minecraft:lava, Minecraft:cactus, Minecraft:explosion, Minecraft:void, or Template:Cmd.
Dropped Minecraft:netherite items cannot be destroyed by Minecraft:fire or Minecraft:lava, and dropped Minecraft:Nether stars cannot be destroyed by explosions.
A submerged object ascends toward the water's surface. If the water is flowing, the object is pushed along with it.
Hoppers draw in any items that are placed above them if they are not Minecraft:powered by Minecraft:redstone.
Stacking
Items, both in a GUI and dropped, can either stack up to 64 or 16, or not stack at all:
- Most items can stack to 64. This includes all full Minecraft:blocks, whose outlines take up an entire block when placed.
- Some items, such as Minecraft:snowballs, empty Minecraft:buckets, Minecraft:eggs, Minecraft:signs, and Minecraft:ender pearls, can stack up to a maximum of 16.
- Some other items do not stack at all, such as anything with a Minecraft:durability (Minecraft:weapons, Minecraft:armor, and Minecraft:tools), filled buckets, and Minecraft:potions.
- All items can technically be forced to stack up to 99Template:Only or 127Template:Only using Minecraft:commands.
Display
Several items have dedicated Minecraft:item textures that are one pixel thick when in the world, but some items corresponding to blocks use the block textures to render as 3D object. A solid white block is rendered in the inventory as follows:
File:Solid White Block Item Front 26.1-snapshot-1.png
- Top: Template:Color
- Left: Template:Color
- Right: Template:Color
Template:IN, blocks that emit Minecraft:light are not shaded, making them appear much brighter.
- Template:BlockLink
- Template:BlockLink
- Template:BlockLinkTemplate:OnlyTemplate:Note
- Template:BlockLinkTemplate:OnlyTemplate:Note — items are not shaded by environmental lighting, making the "glow in the dark".
- Template:BlockLink
- Template:BlockLink
- Template:BlockLink
- Template:BlockLinkTemplate:Note
Displayed items, either on these blocks, the hand (both third-person and first-person), or thrown, are rendered in-game with MERS texture sets with Minecraft:Vibrant Visuals, and can show shadows, reflections, or caustics. Various items have emissive lighting and glow in the dark.
Lists of items
In the game
Items that create blocks, fluids, entities
Items that create blocks with different names:Template:Note Template:Columns-list
Items that directly correspond to Minecraft:blocks, with same name: Template:Collapse
Template:IN technical blocks items can be obtained from inventory editing or Minecraft:add-ons. See Template:Slink for a complete list.
Items with use in the world
These items, when highlighted in a player's hotbar (or "held"), in the off hand, or equipped in an armor slot, can be used by either Template:Control or Template:Control, or can serve a specific purpose (for example, offer the player advantage or disadvantage). Some can be used any time, others only when aiming at specific blocks or entities.
Items with indirect use in the world
The player cannot interact with or directly use these items; however, they are used for Minecraft:trading, Minecraft:brewing, Minecraft:enchanting, or Minecraft:crafting ingredients for other items that do have direct uses. Clocks and recovery compasses are exceptions, as they merely serve an informative function (although clocks also attract piglins as a dropped item entity).
Spawn eggs
Spawn eggs spawn the entity inside them. They cannot be obtained in Survival mode.Template:Columns-list
Minecraft Education items
These items are exclusive to Template:Edu and Template:BE when the "Minecraft Education features" cheat setting is enabled. The Minecraft:portfolio is exclusive to Minecraft Education, and the Minecraft:poster, Minecraft:slate, and Minecraft:camera are obtainable in Bedrock Edition only through inventory editing or add-ons. The Minecraft:garbage item is obtainable only through invalid Minecraft:lab table recipes or via inventory editing.
