The player can apply enchantments to items by:
* Using an Minecraft:enchanting table. An unenchanted item can be enchanted at the cost of Minecraft:lapis lazuli and Minecraft:experience levels.
* Using an Minecraft:anvil.
**An enchanted or unenchanted item can be combined with an Minecraft:enchanted book at the cost of experience levels.
**When two like items are combined, their enchantments are also combined, at the cost of experience levels.
* Using the enchant or give commands.
Enchanted items can be obtained from:
* Minecraft:Trading. Some villagers sell enchanted items for emeralds.
* Minecraft:Fishing. Enchanted items can be obtained from fishing treasure loot.
* Mob Minecraft:drops. Some mobs can spawn with enchanted weapons or armor and have a chance of dropping their items when killed by a player.
* Minecraft:Bartering. Piglins sometimes drop enchanted items when given gold.
* Minecraft:Generated loot from various Minecraft:structures.
* Minecraft:RaidsBE. Minecraft:Pillagers and Minecraft:vindicators spawned during raids may drop enchanted items.
In Creative mode, items can be enchanted using an enchanting table or anvil without using lapis lazuli or experience levels. Enchanted books can be found in the Minecraft:Creative inventory.

An Minecraft:anvil can be used to combine two items and their enchantments, which can be two items of the same type, or an item and an enchanted book. This combines the list of enchantments, keeping the higher level of duplicate enchantments, or upgrading duplicate enchantments of the same level to the next higher.

An Minecraft:anvil can be used to combine the enchantments of two like items, or an item and an enchanted book; one of the items is always sacrificed in the process. Combining items in an anvil costs experience levels; the amount depends on the enchantments of the sacrificed item, and the number of times the items have been used in an anvil.

Many enchantments have multiple levels. Generally, the higher the level, the more potent the enchantment's effects are. Levels are stylized as Roman numerals (I, II, III,...). The minimum level of any enchantment is I; the maximum level depends on the enchantment. When applied using give, which ignores regular maximum levels, the maximum allowed level for any enchantment is 255.

Minecraft:Commands such as give can be used to ignore the normal limit and obtain enchantments with levels 0–255, though the effectiveness of levels higher than the intended one varies by enchantment. ; Incompatibilities
; Incompatibilities
Some enchantments are incompatible with one another. This means that it is not possible for the player to apply both conflicting enchantments to the same item using standard methods, including enchant, although give can force conflicting enchantments onto the same item with varying results to their effects. Enchanting tables and generated loot do not produce items with conflicting enchantments, and attempting to combine conflicting enchantments in an anvil results in the sacrificed item's incompatible enchantment being lost.

Treasure enchantments cannot be obtained through an enchanting table, and are never found on natural equipment worn by mobs or on enchanted equipment traded by villagers. Most treasure enchantments, however, can be generated on Minecraft:enchanted books sold by Minecraft:librarians. If a treasure enchantment is tradable, it has double the price (before capping to 64 emeralds) compared to a non-treasure enchantment of the same level.

Using Minecraft:commands such as give, items can be enchanted with levels 0–255, though the effectiveness of levels higher than the intended one varies by enchantment.
Using give, items can be enchanted at higher levels than in vanilla gameplay. Some enchantments continue to increase their effectiveness at higher levels. However, there is a point where higher levels no longer increase effectiveness. The table below shows the effective limits for enchantments (also found here).

All enchantments have some effective range in which they scale normally, and for enchantments where that is not the entire 0–255 range, all levels outside it are treted as the closest level in the range unless otherwise specified.

File:Enchanted Diamond Sword.gif
The glint animation applied to an enchanted diamond sword.

Enchantments modify the behavior of tools, weapons, and armor, granting additional abilities or strengthening existing ones. A Minecraft:glint animation appears on items to indicate that they are enchanted.

File:Enchanting-Table.png
An enchanting table surrounded by bookshelves.
File:Enchanting Table GUI.png
Enchanting table interface.

Template:Main An Minecraft:enchanting table can be used to enchant unenchanted items at the cost of Minecraft:lapis lazuli and Minecraft:experience levels, or for free in Minecraft:Creative.

Only one of the three random offered enchantments can be selected, however there is a chance for additional enchantments to also be applied. The quality of the enchantments increase with their experience cost and the number of nearby Minecraft:bookshelves, with the effect of bookshelves maxing out at 15.

Template:AnchorAnvil Template:Main An Minecraft:anvil can be used to combine two items and their enchantments, which can be two items of the same type, or an item and an enchanted book. This combines the list of enchantments, keeping the higher level of duplicate enchantments, or upgrading duplicate enchantments of the same level to the next higher.

Combining items in an anvil costs experience levels; the amount depends on the enchantments of the sacrificed item, and the number of times the items have been used in an anvil, except for Minecraft:Creative, where anvils are free.

Trading Template:Main Some villagers sell enchanted equipment or books. Minecraft:Armorer, Minecraft:fisherman, Minecraft:fletcher, Minecraft:toolsmith, and Minecraft:weaponsmith villagers sell enchanted tools, weapons, or armor with non-treasure enchantments. Minecraft:Librarian villagers sell enchanted books that can have almost any enchantment, including most treasure enchantments, but excluding the Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Wind Burst enchantments.

Bartering Template:Main Piglins can trade enchanted books or iron boots with a random level of Soul Speed when given gold ingots.

Fishing Template:Main Enchanted books, bows, and fishing rods can be obtained from fishing up treasure loot.

Mob drops Template:Main Some mobs can spawn with enchanted weapons or armor, which have a chance of 8.5%Template:Only/25%Template:Only + 1% per level of Minecraft:Looting to drop if the mob is killed by a player or tamed wolf.

Generated loot Template:Main Most Minecraft:structures that contain loot chests have a chance of generating enchanted books or items.

Creative Template:Main Minecraft:Enchanted books for all levels of all enchantments can be found in the Creative inventory.

Commands Template:Main Commands such as /give can give a player enchanted items, and /enchant can directly apply enchantments to the item held in the main hand.

Behavior

Effects

The effects of enchantments vary significantly. Some enchantments increase protection against specific types of damage, others increase damage dealt to certain classes of mobs. Some enchantments grant unique abilities such as summoning a lightning bolt or turning water into ice blocks. See Template:Slink.

Level

Many enchantments have multiple levels. Generally, the higher the level, the more potent the enchantment's effects are. Levels are stylized as Roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, V, ...). The minimum level of any enchantment is I; the maximum level depends on the enchantment. Template:IN, for effects that only have level I, no number is shown. Minecraft:Commands such as Template:Command can be used to ignore the normal limit and obtain enchantments with levels 0–255, though the effectiveness of levels higher than the intended one varies by enchantment. See Template:Slink.

Incompatibilities

Some enchantments are incompatible with one another. It is not possible to receive conflicting enchantments from an enchanting table or to find generated loot with conflicting enchantments. Combining items in an anvil loses the sacrificed item's conflicting enchantments. Template:Command refuses to add conflicting enchantments, though other Minecraft:commands, such as Template:Command, can force conflicting enchantments onto the same item with varying results to their effects.

Conflicting enchantments

Primary and secondary items

An enchantment's primary items are the set of items that can receive the enchantment from an enchanting table. Some items that cannot receive a particular enchantment from an enchanting table can still have the enchantment applied to them by combining the item with an enchanted book in an anvil; these are the enchantment's secondary items.

Template:Va

Treasure enchantments cannot be obtained through an enchanting table, and are never found on natural equipment worn by mobs or on enchanted items traded by villagers. Most treasure enchantments, however, can be generated on Minecraft:enchanted books sold by Minecraft:librarians. If a treasure enchantment is tradable, it has double the emerald-price, up to the stack size, compared to a non-treasure enchantment of the same level.

Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Wind Burst can only be obtained in specific structures or through a specific game mechanic.

Template:Columns-list Template:FNlist

Template:Va

Curse enchantments apply negative modifiers to items and cannot be removed once applied. Attempting to Minecraft:disenchant an item with curse enchantments removes all other enchantments, except for the curse enchantments.

Template:Columns-list

Disenchanting

Enchantments can be removed from an item by moving it through a Minecraft:grindstone or combining it with another item in a Minecraft:grindstone or Minecraft:crafting grid. These methods of disenchanting items do not remove curse enchantments.

Maximum effective values for enchantments

Using Minecraft:commands such as Template:Command, items can be enchanted with levels 0–255, though the effectiveness of levels higher than the intended one varies by enchantment.

All enchantments have some effective range in which they scale normally, and for enchantments where that is not the entire 0–255 range, all levels outside it are treted as the closest level in the range unless otherwise specified.
