File:Minecraft Creative.png
The Creative inventory Template:In, filled with a wide variety of items.

Template:Relevant category{{#vardefine:s|18px}}{{#vardefine:s/2|9px}}

An item is an object that can exist within Minecraft:inventories of Minecraft:players, Minecraft:mobs or Minecraft:armor stands; in various Minecraft:containers (like Minecraft:chests or Minecraft:droppers), as well as in Minecraft:item frames, Minecraft:glow item frames, and Minecraft:shelves.

Behavior

Some items when Template:Control, place a Minecraft:block (ItemBlock) or Minecraft:entity (minecart, spawn eggs, etc.) version of themselves into the game Minecraft:world. Put simply, they are an item when in the Minecraft:inventory, and a block when placed. For example, Minecraft:boats turn into an entity when placed, and Minecraft:beds turn into a group of blocks when placed. When selected in the Minecraft:hotbar, items briefly display their names above the Minecraft:HUD.

The only methods by which an item can be properly displayed within the game environment is to place it into an Minecraft:item frame, Minecraft:shelf, Minecraft:campfire, or Minecraft:armor stand. Displayed items, either on these blocks, the hand (both third-person and first-person), or thrown, are rendered in-game with MERS texture sets with Minecraft:Vibrant Visuals, and can show shadows, reflections, or caustics. Various items have emissive lighting and glow in the dark.

Thrown items

If an item that does not become a block is dropped, it becomes an entity represented by a sprite that floats above the ground. It remains for 5 minutes in a loaded Minecraft:chunk before despawning (except for the Minecraft:Nether star), unless the player walks over it to pick it up, it is picked up by a mob, Minecraft:hopper or Minecraft:minecart with hopper, or it is destroyed by Minecraft:fire, Minecraft:lava, Minecraft:cactus, Minecraft:explosion, Minecraft:void, or Template:Cmd.

Dropped Minecraft:netherite items cannot be destroyed by Minecraft:fire or Minecraft:lava, and dropped Minecraft:Nether stars cannot be destroyed by explosions.

A submerged object ascends toward the water's surface. If the water is flowing, the object is pushed along with it.

Hoppers draw in any items that are placed above them if they are not Minecraft:powered by Minecraft:redstone.

Stacking

Items can either stack up to 64 or 16, or not stack at all:

Items that directly correspond to Minecraft:blocks, with same name: Template:Collapse

Template:IN technical blocks items can be obtained from inventory editing or Minecraft:add-ons. See Template:Slink for a complete list.

Items with use in the world

These items, when highlighted in a player's hotbar (or "held"), in the off hand, or equipped in an armor slot, can be used by either Template:Control or Template:Control, or can serve a specific purpose (for example, offer the player advantage or disadvantage). Some can be used any time, others only when aiming at specific blocks or entities.

Template:Columns-list

Items with indirect use in the world

The player cannot interact with or directly use these items; however, they are used for Minecraft:trading, Minecraft:brewing, Minecraft:enchanting, or Minecraft:crafting ingredients for other items that do have direct uses. Clocks and recovery compasses are exceptions, as they merely serve an informative function (although clocks also attract piglins as a dropped item entity).

Spawn eggs

Spawn eggs spawn the entity inside them. They cannot be obtained in Survival mode.Template:Columns-list

Minecraft Education items

These items are exclusive to Template:Edu and Template:BE when the "Minecraft Education features" cheat setting is enabled. The Minecraft:portfolio is exclusive to Minecraft Education, and the Minecraft:poster, Minecraft:slate, and Minecraft:camera are obtainable in Bedrock Edition only through inventory editing or add-ons. The Minecraft:garbage item is obtainable only through invalid Minecraft:lab table recipes or via inventory editing.

By blocks

The following Minecraft:blocks can display items in the world:

By entities

Mobs and some other entities are capable of holding items as well as having them equipped in certain slots; in some cases, this results in the item being visually represented. A table of mobs that do this is as follows.

Note that this does not count Minecraft:equipment, which uses a separate system.

Item shading

Template:Info needed section 3D items in the inventory, i.e. that of blocks, are often displayed as those models rather than as flat graphics. The appearance of these items is affected by shading, which has changed by default throughout game versions, and can be changed inside of the model via the "gui_light" parameter. The default for 3D items is "side", whereas the default for flat items is "front".

The following tables show the results of using a solid white texture, assuming the default windowed resolution of 854x480.

Inventory items

From Beta 1.8 Pre-release to 12w32a, items in the inventory would render darker than they would in the hotbar or in chests. It is not known why this was the case. Both 3D and flat items were affected. This was ultimately fixed in 12w34a.

Rotated block items

In 1.8 snapshots 14w10a to 14w21b, certain items with usually-unattainable damage values (specifically rotated logs, hay bales and quartz pillars) would have their shade intensity per block face cycled around in a different way from other block-items. The level of shading is still the same as typical blocks in this version range, simply with a 90-degree rotation in 3D, manifesting as either a 120-degree reflection alone or one with a horizontal flip in 2D.
