The Exploration Update is the name for Minecraft:Java Edition 1.11, a major update released on November 14, 2016.<ref name="1.11-pre1-blog">https://web.archive.org/web/20161114170041/http://www.mojang.com/2016/11/seek-out-the-exploration-update-111-on-pc-mac-now/</ref> The official name for the update, the Exploration Update, was revealed on September 24, 2016, during the Opening Ceremony at Minecraft:MINECON 2016.<ref>Template:Ytl</ref> During the "Casual Chat with Jens" panel at MINECON, he suggested that the name "Expedition Update" was more suitable to the theme of the update compared to the "Exploration Update".<ref>Template:Ytl</ref>

The main features of the update were announced on the second day of MINECON 2016, during "The Minecraft 1.11 Change Log" on September 25, 2016.<ref>Template:Ytl</ref> However, snapshots for the update initially began around two months prior to the reveal of the main features, with the features being added in a snapshot just a few days after MINECON.

Mojang released the first (and only) pre-release for the Exploration Update on November 8, 2016.

New Minecraft:blocks

- Crafted using six Minecraft:cobblestone, two Minecraft:redstone dusts, and a Minecraft:Nether quartz.
- Used to give a redstone signal when it detects a block update.
Template:Animate Minecraft:Shulker Box
- Crafted using a chest with two Minecraft:shulker shells enclosed on top and at the bottom.
- Allows the player to access storage on the go by keeping any inventory it has when broken.
- Can be dyed to any of the available colors.

- Obtained as drops from Minecraft:shulkers.
- Used to craft a Minecraft:shulker box.

- Obtained as drops from Minecraft:evokers.
- Holding it in the main hand or offhand resurrects the player upon being killed.
  - Absorption and Regeneration is granted upon activation.
  - Cannot prevent deaths when falling through the void.

- Obtained by trading with cartographer villagers.
- Used to locate Minecraft:ocean monuments (blue) or Minecraft:woodland mansions (brown).
- The map shows the outline of land and where the location is and it is filled in as the player approaches the vicinity.

New Minecraft:mobs

- Spawns in extreme hills biomes.
- Attacks when provoked by a player or mob.
- Can be tamed similar to Minecraft:horses, but does not permit the usage of a saddle to be able to ride them freely.
- Using a Minecraft:lead on a llama causes other nearby llamas to follow and form a caravan.
- Can be bred using Minecraft:hay bales.
- Drops Minecraft:leather when killed.

- Found in Minecraft:woodland mansions.
- Attacks any players and Minecraft:villagers nearby.
- Summons fangs and Minecraft:vex to deal with the player.
- When near a blue-dyed Minecraft:sheep in a 16-block radius, it converts their color into red.
- Drops Minecraft:emeralds and a Minecraft:totem of undying when killed.

- Summoned by Minecraft:evokers.
- Attacks any players and Minecraft:villagers nearby.
- Are able to phase through blocks to attack their opponents.

- Found in Minecraft:woodland mansions.
- Attacks any players and Minecraft:villagers nearby.
  - Vindicators named "Johnny" or have the Johnny byte tag enabled become aggressive to all but other Minecraft:illagers.
- Primarily attacks using an Minecraft:iron axe that can disable Minecraft:shields.
- Drops Minecraft:emeralds and rarely an Minecraft:iron axe when killed.
2 new Minecraft:villager professions:

  - A white-robed villager (librarian) that can sell Minecraft:explorer maps.
- File:Nitwit.png Minecraft:Nitwit
  - Cannot trade with the player at all.

New non-mob entities

- Summoned by Minecraft:evokers.
- Causes Template:Health hearts of damage to players and mobs.
- Does not harm any Minecraft:illagers unless it was spawned by the player.

New structures

- Found in Minecraft:roofed forests.
- Consists of three floors that are procedurally-generated.
- Minecraft:Evokers and Minecraft:vindicators can be found here.

New Minecraft:gameplay

- Minecraft:Curse of Vanishing
  - Items and armor pieces enchanted with Curse of Vanishing disappear upon the player using them getting killed.
- Minecraft:Curse of Binding
  - Armor pieces enchanted with Curse of Binding cause the player to be unable to take off the armor piece until its durability is gone or the player dies.
    - It's also possible to enchant items such as Minecraft:mob heads or pumpkins in which the only way to remove them is by dying.
