Old is a deprecated Minecraft:world type exclusive to Template:El and Template:El. The purpose of this world type was to provide smaller worlds on older or low-end devices that did not perform well with infinite worlds, but they have been made inaccessible in 1.18.0. Old worlds created before that version still exist, and can also be created with external programs.
Usage
To create an Old world, the player could select "Old" in the World Type drop-down of the world creation screen. Optionally, on low-end devices, the player could toggle "Limited worlds" in the Video section of the options screen. This sometimes failed due to limited access.Template:Only
Functionality to create old worlds has been removed in version 1.18.0 and they can only be created using third-party tools<ref name=":0">World Generator - MCBE Essentials</ref> or by editing the level.dat.
Old worlds can be converted to infinite worlds at any time. This creates a copy of the world (named <WorldName>-Old), and allows chunks to be generated outside the old boundaries. The world is still locked in version 1.17.0, which can only be removed with NBT editing.
Generation
Overworld
Old worlds consisted of a finite map with an area of 256×256 blocks with 128 maximum block height. Functionality for any world size exists by editing the Template:Cd and Template:Cd values in level.dat or using third-party tools.<ref name=":0" />
The world is version-locked in 1.17.0. Any newer features, including the Caves & Cliffs Minecraft:world generation, are not available. Minecraft:Experiments are still available, which can sometimes clash with the lacking resources. For example, enabling "Render Dragon Features for Creators" allows Minecraft:Vibrant Visuals to be enabled, but there are no configurations or PBR textures.
Biomes
Dark forests and dark forest hills cannot be generated in this world type, therefore also restricting Minecraft:woodland mansions.
As a result of their limited size, only a few biomes can be generated per world. In addition, since dark forests do not generate, areas of specific lush biomes are shuffled slightly, compared to their placements in default worlds before 1.18. Also, biomes that are generated here are shrunken 4× (16× area) to allow more biomes to generate. Due to this shrinking, a seed generates different terrain in an old world than in an infinite world, although with similar overall characteristics.
The Minecraft:player always spawns in the middle of the world. If the starting Minecraft:map is enabled, the map is in scale level Template:Frac rather than of Template:Frac.
The center of the world is rarely at 0,0, meaning the game finds a valid spawn point, then it limits the world to 256×256 around that point, so the center of the world is the coordinate of that spawn point. It is possible, through NBT editing, to move the center of an old-world to another area in the seed.
Structures
Some generated structures never appear in the Old world type:
- Minecraft:Mineshafts, Minecraft:ocean monuments, Minecraft:strongholds, Minecraft:dungeons, Minecraft:desert pyramids, Minecraft:jungle pyramids, Minecraft:swamp huts, Minecraft:igloos, Minecraft:ocean ruins, Minecraft:shipwrecks, Minecraft:pillager outposts, and Minecraft:ruined portals do not generate, making resources limited.
- Minecraft:Caves and Minecraft:canyons do not generate in this world type, making the underground area solid, although Minecraft:amethyst geodes and other hollow areas occasionally appear.
- Tall grass and ferns do not generate as part of any biomes, though they can generate as part of village structures. This makes certain biomes such as plains and savannas less grassy. Grass only generates in Minecraft:bamboo jungles, while large ferns are generated normally.
Other structures and structure-like Minecraft:features can generate in the Overworld:
- Minecraft:Villages sometimes generate near – and get cut off by – the world border, resulting in a village without any meeting point, only one house, or a jobsite building, or even just a road.
- Lakes can still generate normally, but lava lakes do not generate near bedrock. Also, lakes do not generate under Y=10, due to the ground being completely solid.
- Minecraft:Desert wells rarely generate in this world type.
- On rare occasions, buried treasures and Minecraft:fossils can generate.
Some mechanics are broken in this world type:
- Unlocking the last tier of cartographer Minecraft:villagers causes the game to stop ticking.
- If the player obtains an ocean explorer map or a treasure map from commands, any explored areas outside the world border are completely black. If the player attempts to get a woodland explorer map, the game stops ticking for about 100 seconds, and an error message was eventually given.
- Feeding a dolphin causes it to try to swim outside the world border.
- Throwing an eye of ender causes it to be frozen at the world border.
Due to the structure limitations in this world type, many resources become unobtainable or non-renewable in Survival, and some mobs cannot spawn naturally.
Nether and End
With this world type, the Overworld is the only dimension that generated. Attempting to go to other dimensions results in the portal not being activated.
However, the Nether and the End actually exist in this world type; the only way to access these dimensions is via the commands Template:Command, Template:Command, or Template:Command with the corresponding portal block.
Both the Nether and the End are also bordered with the size 256×128×256. The Nether's terrain and biomes still generate normally, but the 8:1 travel ratio was maintained, meaning that returning to the Overworld often causes the player to become stuck outside the boundary.
If a Minecraft:Nether fortress is generated, it is most likely going to be cut down by the world border. Despite Nether portals not being able to be activated, returning from the Nether to the Overworld causes a newly activated Nether portal to generate in the Overworld.
The End in old worlds generate only the central island without the outer islands. Sometimes the Minecraft:exit portal does not generate and the Minecraft:ender dragon can get stuck at the border. Minecraft:End gateways also do not work, due to the size limit.
