Geared mobs#Picking up gear
Some strays spawn with the ability to pick up dropped Minecraft:items from the ground. Unlike Minecraft:zombies, however, they pick up only weapons, Minecraft:shields, and armor. Java, strays pick up items that they happen to walk near. Bedrock, they actively search for and walk towards dropped items.
If the picked up item is a Minecraft:weapon (other than a bow), the stray uses the item as a melee weapon. Strays do not pick up Minecraft:spears under any circumstances. Java, strays prefer bows over other weapons, and do not pick up other weapons while wielding a bow. Bedrock, the only weapon a stray will swap its held bow for is a Minecraft:sword. When picking up weapons, strays prefer ones that deal more damage without considering enchantments. They also prefer weapons with NBT data over those without, and weapons that are less damaged.
If the picked up item is a shield, the stray equips the shield into their offhand. It cannot use the shield to block incoming attacks, however.
If the picked up item is Minecraft:armor, a Minecraft:carved pumpkin or a Minecraft:head, the stray equips itself with the item. Strays prefer armor that give more armor points, and will replace their current armor with it. Strays pick up cosmetic wearables (heads and carved pumpkins) as long as they aren't wearing a Minecraft:helmet, and will replace the cosmetic wearable if they find a helmet.
If a stray has equipment and picks up something they prefer more, the stray drops the old equipment, with the same chance as if killed with Looting IIs this still the case in both Java and Bedrock?, in favor of the new one.
A stray equipped with a picked-up Minecraft:item becomes persistent and does not Minecraft:despawn, similar to being named.

Template:Update Template:Infobox entity A stray is a Minecraft:skeleton variant that spawns in various snow-covered Minecraft:biomes. They behave very similarly to skeletons, except they fire Minecraft:tipped arrows of Minecraft:Slowness from their Minecraft:bows and do not freeze in Minecraft:powder snow.

Spawning

A stray may spawn directly under the sky in Minecraft:snowy plains, or Minecraft:ice spikes, replacing 80% of skeletons. Additionally, a stray may spawn in frozen rivers, Minecraft:frozen oceans, Minecraft:deep frozen oceans, Minecraft:legacy frozen oceans, Minecraft:snowy slopes, Minecraft:jagged peaks, and Minecraft:frozen peaks in Minecraft:Bedrock Edition. Strays do not spawn naturally from Minecraft:monster spawners Template:In.

Template:Mob spawn table

Converting

When a Minecraft:skeleton is kept inside Minecraft:powder snow for Template:Convert, it begins shaking. After another Template:Convert, it becomes a stray. A converted stray appears with full health even if the original skeleton did not have full health. Items being held or worn by a skeleton when it becomes a stray remain unchanged. Unlike regular skeletons, Minecraft:bogged and Minecraft:parched do not turn into strays, but take freezing damage instead.

Trial spawners

Strays have a Template:Frac chance to be selected as the "ranged" mob for Minecraft:trial spawners in Minecraft:trial chambers.

Spider jockeys

Template:IN, Minecraft:spiders and Minecraft:cave spiders spawned in biomes where strays can spawn (spiders cannot naturally spawn in Minecraft:snowy plains) have a 1% chance to spawn as a Minecraft:spider jockey, with an 80% chance of the rider being a stray. Template:IN, stray spider jockeys cannot spawn naturally, but the skeleton rider can convert into a stray and continue as a stray spider jockey.

Drops

On death

Template:DropTable

Behavior

Strays behave the same as normal skeletons but make noises with an echoing effect and shoot Minecraft:tipped arrows that inflict Minecraft:Slowness for 30 seconds on any target that they hit. Template:IN, strays that are underwater use a melee attack that inflicts Slowness. Strays do not take damage from freezing in powder snow, but they are not immune to Slowness. A stray holding a Minecraft:tipped arrow or Minecraft:spectral arrow in its off-hand always shoots that type of arrow instead, and the arrow held is not consumed.

Being an Minecraft:undead mob, they are:

As they are also under the "skeletons" Minecraft:entity type tag, if a stray kills a Minecraft:creeper, the creeper drops a Minecraft:music disc, randomly selected from 13, cat, blocks, chirp, far, mall, mellohi, stal, strad, ward, 11, and wait.

Like Minecraft:bogged and Minecraft:parched, the eyes of strays are emissive with Minecraft:Vibrant Visuals.

Picking up items

Template:Main Some strays spawn with the ability to pick up dropped Minecraft:items from the ground. Unlike Minecraft:zombies, however, they pick up only weapons, Minecraft:shields, and armor. Template:IN, strays pick up items that they happen to walk near. Template:IN, they actively search for and walk towards dropped items.

If the picked up item is a Minecraft:weapon (other than a bow), the stray uses the item as a melee weapon. Strays do not pick up Minecraft:spears under any circumstances. Template:IN, strays prefer bows over other weapons, and do not pick up other weapons while wielding a bow. Template:IN, the only weapon a stray will swap its held bow for is a Minecraft:sword.

If a stray has equipment and picks up something they prefer more, the stray drops the old equipment, with the same chance as if killed with Looting ITemplate:Verify, in favor of the new one.

A stray equipped with a picked-up Minecraft:item becomes persistent and does not Minecraft:despawn, similar to being named.

Trivia

 • Strays and other skeleton variants do not know how to use a Minecraft:crossbow, despite the same using method as a Minecraft:bow.
 • According to the Minecraft:Minecraft website, the slowness arrows represent frozen arrows that freeze on impact.
 • The stray's fourth ambient sound is the skeleton's second ambient sound but partly edited.
